"Curse you spinning jenny, you ruined everything!" A simpleton looking peasant yells as they smash the wooden machine. The standard narrative goes that LUDDITES were foolish lunatics who, in fear of technology, decided progress was bad, and started hitting it with sticks. (But the truth is entire ways of life were being destroyed.) Previously, skilled craftsmen were respected for the time and effort it took to do their work. The entire family usit would form a cottage industry - creating something valuable, and command a decent living. But when a machine can work 10 times faster its owner can charge less for the prodcts- craftsmen couldn't compete and were left out of work almost overnight. And as factories became a fixture of the british landscape, these now unemployed labourers often ended up working the factories that had just destroyed their way of life. Britain was the most prosperous nation in history, factory owners became extremely wealthy and influential. But the people doing the actual work saw almost none of it.

This is so, so well-articulated.
People call this friction "grunt work." Schwartz uses exactly that phrase, and he's right that LLMs can remove it. What he doesn't say, because he already has decades of hard-won intuition and doesn't need the grunt work anymore, is that for someone who doesn't yet have that intuition, the grunt work is the work. The boring parts and the important parts are tangled together in a way that you can't separate in advance. You don't know which afternoon of debugging was the one that taught you something fundamental about your data until three years later, when you're working on a completely different problem and the insight surfaces. Serendipity doesn't come from efficiency. It comes from spending time in the space where the problem lives, getting your hands dirty, making mistakes that nobody asked you to make and learning things nobody assigned you to learn.

I like both archetypes of characters when applied appropriately, but still wanted to make this meme anyway
"The Virgin Trauma Vengeance" "no you don't get it I suffered a lot" catches innocents in the crossfire "woe is me I have to be evil there's no other way" doesn't care about fixing the system, just want sot not be at the bottom "I'm owed this" appeals to pity "you would never understand" vs the Chad Trauma Cycle Breaker "No one should suffer the way I did" punishes those responsible and nobody else "there's always a choice" plants seeds to fix the system even if they never see the fruits of their labor "only we can fix this together" needs no pity "and I'm not alone"
