During WWII, Aberdeen was raided by the Luftwaffe 34 times between 1940–43, earning the nickname “Siren City”.

Using contemporary photographs and bomb maps, the Highland IC followed the trail of the Blitz on a self-guided tour of the city.

When I started writing The Undefeated, I wasn’t sure anyone would read it.

Today it’s reached readers in the UK, USA, Canada, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium and Australia.

Thank you to everyone who has bought, reviewed, recommended or shared the book.

6 June is best known as D-Day.

But four years earlier, my great-grandfather John Conway was fighting at Franleu in Normandy with the 7th Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders.

His capture and POW experiences inspired The Undefeated.

Sometimes history becomes personal.

They were starved, beaten, marched across continents - yet never broken.
The Undefeated reveals the real stories of Allied POWs in WWII, told in their own words. Not myth. Not film. Reality.
The photographs show their faces. This book tells their story.

Great work from our own Highland IC member @bill1940.bsky.social

Looking forward to The Undefeated.
The good people at @barnthorn have been kind enough to let me share this image of the proposed cover of my first book - The Undefeated - a fresh look at the experiences of US and DUKE POWs in Europe which should be coming to your shelves in January 26! #historybookposts

The ‘Ballachulish Three’ - amazing.
As part of VE Day 80 at Stirling Castle (3–4 May), Susan Kemp shares the true story of the ‘Ballachulish Three’—POWs who escaped Nazi Germany in 1940, trekking 1000+ miles home using Gaelic to hide their identity. Talks at 11am & 2pm daily. Photo: trio post-escape, Glencoe backdrop.

Fascinating documents from our own @bill1940.bsky.social
While recently reading through SHAEF files related to POW camps I came across a report on what Allied troops uncovered at Buchenwald. A grim but necessary reminder of a horror that still haunts us. #HMD2025 1/3

Fascinating article researched by our own @bill1940.bsky.social. Amazing story of one the Great Escapers!
EXCLUSIVE: The Elgin man who survived the real-life Great Escape
RAF pilot Alistair Thompson McDonald was among those who broke out of Stalag Luft 3 in 1944, but the Moray man avoided the grisly fate of many of his colleagues.
