joining the #sealeychallenge late because I'd love to read more poetry this month 💌
sealeychallenge.bsky.social Sealey Challenge @sealeychallenge.bsky.social · Aug 4
Remember, the point of the Sealey Challenge isn't perfection—the point is to spend time with poetry! Whether you read 31 poems or 31 books this August, all time spent with poetry is
meaningful 💖

There’s no wrong way to #SealeyChallenge
what if I can't read 31 books of poetry in 31 days? that's okay!

I miss the days when media companies weren't so overtly evil that it wasn't publicly acceptable to admit to pirating things.

it was important for me to call this out. King, though I love him, has been getting away with nakedly hateful fatphobia for half a century now and the majority of readers seem to have handwaved it, but I can't. (a shout out to @megelison.bsky.social, though, who's been banging this drum for years)
And King has never created a fat character he didn’t insist on treating as a disgusting spectacle. In “Other Worlds Than These,” there’s a particularly insulting episode concerning a family of fat people; King seems to take perverse pleasure in commenting on their “elephantine thighs” and “huge rolls of flesh.” Jack speculates that the family’s front porch “must have been specially reinforced to take the combined weight of such behemoths,” and when the daughter attempts to rape and kill him in his bed that night, she “lands on him like a truck falling off a jack,” breaking the bed frame. I wonder if it has ever occurred to King that fat people read his books, too.

This year’s #BannedBooksWeek coincides with ALA’s official 150th anniversary. To mark the occasion, ALA has released a list of the 150 most challenged books documented from 1990, when ALA's Office for Intellectual Freedom began tracking book challenges, through 2025.

(really) sad version
The absence had a shape to it. Or, a form. A distinct without-ness. A lack. Once, on Jakku, when the day marks covered about half of her ship's wall, Rey had slipped on footing shed held dozens of times before. The swoop in her stomach as she fell down her rope was almost a reprieve from the gnawing hunger. After, when she'd hobbled her way to the healer, they'd given her something to drink while they re-set her injury. It tasted like fuel as it went down, and nearly came back up, but soon Rey could see her arms and legs without feeling the searing. Numb. It lasted long enough for her to make it home, and sleep. She didn't have any portions for three days, and never slipped again. Being, without Ben there, felt like that numbness. She saw her hands as she flew thefighter, the Falcon. She knew her feet carried her from the base to a desert. But where there was once a hum, liveliness, a promise, there was now nothing. It was a lost sense—tasteless, scentless, silent, dull. All-encompassing and nonexistent. Truly alone.

when someone drops "sportsball" into a conversation like this they are madder than they have ever been in their life
dennycarter.bsky.social Denny Carter @dennycarter.bsky.social · 1d
the tech bro who uses AI to play fantasy football for him is being dragged online. no one has ever been quite so mad frankly.
"but you've automated your hobby" ... no, fantasy football is not my hobby. it's more of a social obligation. my actual hobbies are gainful and awesome and mostly involve being outside. not fixating on team news and sportsball RNG. i have more time to do them because I use Al for all the boring stuff in my life.
