It's time for another SPARCstation Sunday - this time with my Frankenstein SPARCstation 2. I originally purchased a 1+, but it was nearly destroyed in shipping (hundreds of plastic fragments), so I bought another, discovering the motherboard had been swapped with an SS2! 1/4

Well, it's Sunday, so time for another thread on the latest project. My first computer was a #VIC20, so I pretty much had to get one - but the RF output quality is...terrible on modern displays. Here's GORF via direct RF input on my TV 1/1

So, I (accidentally) discovered a cool hack today for loading multipart #VIC-20 cartridge images that are supplied as .prg files. I've got a Penultimate2+ cartridge (blog.tynemouthsoftware.co.uk/2023/06/penu...) and an SD2IEC (sd2iec.de). 1/7

It's a #sitemanager Sunday. A bit of networking obscurity: I used to work for Nortel Networks, who had acquired Bay Networks in 1998, so I had to learn a lot about the Bay networking products. Bay Networks was the product of a 1994 merger of #Wellfleet and #SynOptics. 1/5

It's a beautiful #SCSI Sunday AM so I thought I'd turn back to my #PS/2 Model 70 to see if I could finish an old project. A while ago I acquired a pair of Future Domain MCS-350 MCA SCSI cards, but couldn't get them working. The cards have a copyright of 1988 and most of the ICs have a 1988 date. 1/8

So, I always dreamed of having an #atari2600. Well after helping a friend set up their wi-fi a few years ago, she insisted on paying me, but I had spotted a disused something in her crawlspace that I asked if I could have in lieu of cash. 1/8

It's Saturday morning, so that means it's time for a #retrocomputing thread; this time, it's on disk replacements for my PS/2 Model 55SX and 70. A bit of quick history: Both of these machines came from IBM with DBA-ESDI hard drives. What's that, you ask? DBA-ESDI is direct-bus-attached ESDI. 1/12

Sunday thread:
My first PC was a Zenith Z-286 LP Plus, a 12MHz 286, quite a nice machine from late in the 286 lifecycle and I found a great video on it here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=FYpB...

One of its unique features was that it could be upgraded to an 80386SX-16 via swapping a daughtercard. 1/8

Very excited - delivery came yesterday with an original set of #SunOS 4.0.3 tapes for the #SPARCstation 1! I'll have to repair the broken bands, and here's hoping for no bitrot, or that someone overwrote them over the years 😬

I recently read Tae Kim's (wwww.taekim.com) new book, 'The Nvidia Way'; it's a great and inspiring read. A thing of interest for me was the in-depth background on the pre-Nvidia years of Jensen, Curtis and Chris at LSI and Sun, in particular their work on the SunGX Graphics Accelerator. 1/7

It's SPARCstation Saturday, so with kind of edutainment, kind of a PSA, here goes:

These are the SPARCstation lunchboxes (minus the ZX, which I'll get to in a minute). If you have one of these, you can probably still save it from an untimely demise. 1/10

Restoring an original SunCD Drive, a thread:

So it looks like I bought this beauty back in 2023, in a combo with a SPARCclassic, 1/9
