Tropical Disease in Untropical Places: Thinking of Malaria in Canada
The processes designed to “soften” Upper Canada’s disease landscape—such as agriculture and settlement—were also tools of settler colonialism.

Sooooo…. Spotify quietly released this feature + DMs 2 years ago. Thinking that it was just music, we gave our then 12 y/o downtime and screen time exceptions for the app. That was a mistake.

I was a proofreader at the Abigal Press specializing in prayer cards and funeral programs. Double checked names, birth and death dates, front saint requests and back prayer matches. Triple checked program bios.
Happy labor day (USA). What's one of the oddest paid job you've had? Mine was probably as a reader for a medical professor at Rutgers, whose eyes were failing. I read him many academic texts, as well as Samuel Butler's "The Way of All Flesh."

🧵 It’s great that we’re “attracting talent,” as they say, but where’s the half-billion $ to hire permanently the generations of beyond-excellent, Canadian-trained academics who have been forced into precarious positions by systematic defunding by federal & provincial gov’s for the past 30 years?
Why Ivy League professors are leaving Trump’s U.S. for Canada’s new $541-million research program
AI researchers, Ivy League professors, and at least one winner of the MacArthur “genius” grant will move to Canada from the U.S. with funds from the federal government’s research chair program.

there are more than twice as many museum workers in the US than there are coal miners
On my blog, I wrote about how America's museums are falling apart. The US has 20k+ museums, and most have historic buildings with leaky roofs, failing HVAC units, and flooding basements. What they don't have is money for repairs. Please read/share! 🧵

"Women accounted for 100 percent of the decline in the labor force in July, according to a National Women’s Law Center analysis of the Bureau of Labor Statistics’s latest dismal jobs report.

Overall, the economy lost 23,000 jobs in July: Women lost 32,000 jobs, while men gained 9,000."
Trump’s Terrible July Jobs Numbers Only Hurt Women
And the number of women who have left the workforce since January is more than double the number of men.

Many people asked me early on: if ICE seems to just be rounding up random brown people on the street, why are they on a shopping spree for massive amounts of surveillance capabilities. The answer was always for this.
Bombshell report from the Wall Street Journal: DHS has been tracking down Americans at work and on the road who are critical of immigration policies, spending millions on contractors to surveil First Amendment protected speech and create political dossiers. Outrageous. www.wsj.com/politics/pol...
How ICE Is Weaponizing Social Media Against Its Critics
The agency says its surveillance program searches for threats to agents, but critics see free-speech infringements.

Can't get numb to this: The United States is stuck in a war it started, cannot end, and may further escalate to no avail, having dismantled its diplomatic apparatus, depleted its military stockpile, and destroyed its credibility. A historic strategic mistake harming millions in many different ways.

Why not both?
I’ve always thought “Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous” and “The Apprentice” had more to do Trump’s appeal than all this New Masculinity stuff. Lack of inhibition and moral constraint, in our age, is more a product of wealth than of gender. Trump embodied a kind of cartoon image of wealth.

Happy Tuesday! Who's ready to hear about

1. Flesh-eating maggots (mostly go after cattle)

2. They're native to the US

3. The USDA has kept them out of the US since the 1960s

4. But the flesh-eating maggots are making a 21st century comeback. And believe it or not it may be thanks to MAGA.
