Been playing about with “my” version of “The Final Frontier” by #Maiden. I always thought ‘Satellite 15’ was crap. Apart from some portions of the middle section, ‘When the Wild 💨 Blows’ remains a low ebb of 21C Maiden. And I’d drop ‘The Alchemist’, a rote rocker. The shaves over 20 minutes off it.

Laughing Stock is 35 years old today. I bought it the week it came out; it might just be the best eight quid I ever spent. Some thoughts on what it meant then, and what it means now.

I’ll always have a special place in my heart for this one. I can vividly remember the 1st listen to “BNW” at my house with my bestie on day of release (us both having bought a copy and walked back). This started and we just looked at each other, mouths wider at every time change, just: “Fuuuuuuck!”

I loved “BNW”. Bought it on its day of release. Took it home. Caned it. But in the years since I’ve noticed its flaws (for my ears). Shirley’s production stops me loving (all of) it now. Take ‘TWM’ as an example. There doesn’t seem to be much depth or nuance. It’s all LOUD and a tad one dimensional.
As nut-busting as #Maiden Y2K were, I was always left a little wanting by ‘The Wicker Man’. I also think, with hindsight, a lot of what I struggle with in Kevin Shirley’s production in general is all right there in that song. I’ll try and articulate what I mean…

I loved “BNW”. Bought it on its day of release. Took it home. Caned it. But in the years since I’ve noticed its flaws (for my ears). Shirley’s production stops me loving (all of) it now. Take ‘TWM’ as an example. There doesn’t seem to be much depth or nuance. It’s all LOUD and a tad one dimensional.
