Chicago folks: we might not have 287(g) agreements to push back on in Illinois, but we're surrounded by a growing number of local PDs + sheriffs' offices in Wisconsin, Indiana, Kentucky, and Missouri that participate.

Make sure your friends and family in those states understand what's at stake.
Two more Louisiana agencies added in today's update, bringing this total up to 99 participating agencies in the state.

Next state to hit 100 after Louisiana? Most likely Alabama, with 82 active agencies today.
Also tracking for Round Number Milestones™: Louisiana currently has 95 agencies w/ active agreements, which is about 29.1% of the 326 state, county, and local law enforcement agencies in the state.

100 active agencies would make Louisiana the 9th (NINTH) state to hit triple digit participation.

Btw: Texas sheriffs are also eligible for immigration enforcement grants under Operation Lone Star, launched by Gov. Abbott in 2021.

"By joining Operation Lone Star, Hahn said, the County could become eligible for state grant funding and other assistance."

The result is $2 billion in eligible funding through FY26, and at least $1.8 billion a year moving forward even if no more programs sign up (though as @tituslegaldesign.com helpfully tracks, more are still signing up every day). The $1.8 billion does not even include incentive payments.

While I don't have good data on this (yet...), I'll just note how common stories like this, from Swifton, Arkansas, come up when I search for small town police departments after they join the 287(g) program.

Swifton's population is about 700 residents.

Anyways, wonder which Miami gated community the Bolsonaro family ends up choosing.

Aside from an effort to move off substack for publishing, redundancy is good!
That includes a new /resources folder, starting with a list of important resources like this ⤵️, research + policy analysis, fact sheets, etc. Stay tuned for more here soon.

'I think we can all agree that a 2-month-old baby should be with their mother,' protest organizer Kim Haslam told the crowd."
A young couple were detained by ICE after a traffic stop. Ogden protesters want them home with their baby.

So, we got an update, and it's...a mess.

31 new agreements, 9 removed.

There are now 2,314 law enforcement agencies with an active 287(g) agreement.
Will we get a new list of 287(g) agreements from ICE today?

They haven't posted an updated list since last Tuesday (10/20), after several weeks with 2-3 updates per week. Meanwhile, ICE hasn't added links to any of the 700+ agreements signed after June 29th. The data quality is getting worse.

And we reached 1,000 counties with an active sheriff's office or other county-level agency.
Btw, the next round number milestone we'll reach in the 287(g) program, likely early next week, is...*drum roll*....

1,000 of the 3,144 county-level jurisdictions in the U.S. will have at least one county-level agency active. We're currently at 995 (31.6%).
This afternoon's update from ICE puts us over 2,300 local, county, and state law enforcement agencies with at least one active 287(g) agreement.

Just watched 3 CPD in an unmarked cruiser pull someone over as they dropped off a teenage (Latino) kid on our block.

Driver was allowed to go right after they ran the license, so I'm wondering what part of "public safety" this is? And what are the chances any of the 3 cops actually log this stop?

That’s a staggering fact to take in: About 1/3 of U.S. counties are now contractually partnered with ICE—to say nothing of all the counties assisting ICE more informally.

I wrote recently about what this type of collaboration can do to communities: boltsmag.org/frederick-co...

So this is a silly story, but for a year or two in 2013/2014 I went around telling everyone I could find about this little cryptography library called “OpenSSL” and how it was used everywhere, but had almost no developers or security budget.
