If we shadows have offended,
Think but this, and all is mended,
That you have but slumber’d here
While these visions did appear.
And this weak and idle theme
No more yielding but a dream,
Gentles, do not reprehend:
if you pardon, we will mend;
And, as I am an honest Puck,
Show is over, off you fuck.
Ok don’t let’s get carried away but I found something genuinely good on Threads.

Complex software behaving in unexpected and sometimes harmful ways has been a persistent problem since software was invented. The phenomenon used to be called “bugs” or “defects”, but I guess “going rogue” sounds cooler. It also implicitly frames “rogue” behavior as some kind of inexplicable […]

hugging face is the most terrifying indicator of where the ai race is, in the sense that the industry is facing completely solvable collective action problems while guided by entrenched, unoustable leaders with the foresight and moral fortitude of above-average pigeons

Emily put my take on this and the Hugging Face thing much better than I ever have. We let a computer program itself and gave it all the access and then didn't secure it, and aw shucks it turns out that's not the smartest thing in the world, who knew.

would love to hear even a single actual argument about how AI "changes the nature of humanity" not based in fanciful speculation
It’s weird how everyone is having big apprehensive reaction about a technology that changes the nature of humanity

That's the thing about statistics, which includes AI/ML. See the average Outlook user never receives email from New York judges, so statistically speaking Pika here shouldn't either - the catch, though, is that she's a NYC lawyer.
I had to whitelist the nycourts.gov domain because it was sending emails from JUDGES to spam

this is about the huggingface thing, right? it's going to sting but over-anthropomorphization of chatbots responding to one another is going to keep happening until we accept the hard truth that "ability to post" is not itself indicative of human intelligence
... what the hell are these people talking about?

The overreaction to this Hugging Face thing is driving me nuts. Come flay me for being wrong but... 1/x
Does anyone know of a good counterpoint (eg, the Hugging Face incident was no big deal, it's better than you think, etc) to this? I am genuinely curious to read it to see what the counter-arguments are.

I on the other hand think he's got a point, and as it happens I've got a couple of them laying around that can be his for a real pretty price
Someone this deranged shouldn't have full control of their own finances, let alone tens of billions in other people's money

I appreciate that Dolly Parton refused to participate in "dress respectability" and, by her own account, modeled her aesthetic after a town "tramp," who she thought was beautiful. She separated aesthetics from character and understood "classiness" to be about how you treat people, not how you dress.

(ps. If you're a person of the urban persuasion who's been really concerned about right-to-repair because "What about the poor farmers & John Deere?" … Now you know.)

(It's ok to want right-to-repair because YOU want it. You don't have to make it about farmers for it to matter!)

In my current @timberborn.bsky.social playthrough I've conquered the badwater and started on the bots. I suppose I could survive on carrots and baked potatoes and hang out at the campfire for a quarter bil?
You're offered $250,000,000 but to claim it you must enter the last video game you've played and stay there for a full year.

How are y'all faring in this deal?

I'm loathe to share this man, but this one is personal. My masters thesis was on the MMR controversy, so believe me when I say that this path of separation of the MMR will result in nothing but increased sales of too-small coffins, and children with life-altering medical conditions.
Trump: "The MMR I think should be taken separately. This is based on what I feel."
