ET in the middle of the stuffed animals. I was maybe 3 or 4 and walked into a room where my cousins were watching ET right at that scene. Horrifying.
In honor of scary media month: what is the first piece of media you remember truly frightening you as a child?

I'm so fed up with people talking about how useful ai is in meetings that I've started keeping a folder of news articles about ai being terrible

I haven't and won't read it; they're always the same: about the perspective of the cut off parents and the "experts" who aren't the therapists working with the adult kids cutting them off.

It's an obvious power choice of whose perspective matters in the articles, and it's never the one leaving.
I'm not gonna quote post that estrangement article doing the rounds cos I ain't giving them the metrics but part of being in queer community is knowing a lot of people who are estranged from family. None of them broke contact for trivial reasons.

Does she make herself a real hazard when I'm going a paint by the numbers and cause multiple smears by nuzzling the paintbrush?

Yes.

Is she also totally worth every smear and washed paw with her incredible cuteness?

Very yes.

a lot of white queers don't understand what whiteness is, and that makes much of their interactions with queer folk of color suck, so I'll explain a little.

The two facets of whiteness that are most important in this context are that it is a social and legal exemption from racial oppression.

Honestly, the asexuality part is really important. (Polyamory too for legal reasons especially.)

People always demand why asexuality requires protection, but it’s already happening in many religiously conservative places—it’s being labeled a deviant “ideology”.

I'm getting worried about this fuel situation as summer turns into fall, which will turn into winter.

Oil heaters are hard enough for people to afford oil for now, I'm really worried about what will happen this winter with that.

Young person: so I have jury duty, but I don't know the law how will that work?
Me: *explains fact finding and judge instruction of the jury re: law*
Also me: it's also important that you remember that jury nullification is part of why we have juries, let me explain that to you, little tadpole

This post is making the rounds again for some reason and therefore I feel I must inform you that they’ve hired another one so there are now TWO forensic pathologists working in Iceland.
My favourite fact about Iceland is that we have many, many crime writers but only one forensic pathologist, and he was so busy answering all of their questions that he decided to have a small seminar for writers to get some peace.

It immediately sold out so he had another one that also sold out.

God bless the lunatics who made legends of tomorrow and it's insane over the top glory in every episode.

And especially bless the soundtrack people for going so brilliantly along with every over the top theme

Cops in my city refused to even let ice park in their parking lot. We're not safe--but other cities in the state are getting a lot more ice than we are now.

The thing to understand about romance is that romance will absolutely shank romance in a drive-by romance-on-romance shanking, but that just makes us very good at shanking, and there are so many of us that we have a lot of practice.
The thing is, they may not realise how many of the people affected are romance authors, and relatedly that we have a paramilitary wing.

I accept the necessity of Bell Peppers but I don't have to like them.

Cooking for myself means I can chop them into shreds, so they'll cook down and not be noticeable while still providing the necessary flavour

Evergreen reminder.
nobody talks about John Smith blowing up his own dick like an absolute dipshit, including my HS English teacher, who had a whole unit about John Smith being a dipshit. I had to learn this intel on the streets.

so: this is your annual reminder that John Smith (of Pocahontas) blew up his own dick.

Though I won't forget at my first Worldcon, I'd asked a friend to sneak back to a book stall to buy Castle hangnail as a surprise for my sister (who was with me)

And friend texted me that Ursula Vernon saw them buying it and offered to sign it with many exclamation points.
To jump off this, if I’m at a con, please don’t feel obligated to come up with something clever before talking to me. Unless you catch me in the first hour of the first day, odds are good I’m not clever at that exact moment either. You can grunt “Book good!” and I’ll grunt “Yay!” and we’re fine.
I would presume that the best thing* to say to an author at a con is "Wow; I loved "cool detail in your obscure work that no fan usually mentions"; have a great day!" followed by a generic "I love your work; it's great to see you here." *Unless it is "I am a Media CEO; here is $$$$ for options."

When I write a feature like the one being discussed here, I am drawing on decades of experience in fandom and years of (unpaid or under-compensated) labor spent studying and writing about fan culture professionally. I do this work because I think fan culture merits earnest, thoughtful analysis.
WELL. If you wondered why I had zero things to say about the NYT piece on the HR AI fic situation last month...I had zero things to say publicly then. 🥲 Thank you to everyone who discussed this situation with me and read a draft of this. I tried my best to illustrate these longstanding dynamics:
