Not long after I got up, in the wee dark hours, I heard the coyotes in the marshy scrub woods off behind our house howling and barking. It's a forlorn and spooky sound. It's also why I stopped taking walks down wooded dirt roads in the early hours of the day.

Thread up and down, and in 100% agreement.
Yeah, I mean "my wife's hot, gender isn't real, we don't give a shit if you think we're trans or not, go fuck yourselves" while whirling a claymore round your head in nipple stickers is about as good a response as anyone has ever given.

What about food safety, Mike? What should we do there?

"They can self-police. They can self-regulate."

The GOP goal of removing "red tape" (regulations that protect consumers) is one of the biggest frauds they peddle. Deregulation means "let corpos make more profit at the expense of your family."

You bend the knee, because you think that's the middle ground, and you lose everything, because bending the knee rather than standing up to evil tips you onto their side, and no one likes a collaborator.

742 days... and suddenly things are stirring. Rejections/acceptances are showing up in Submission Grinder today. Can this long midnight of our writing souls be reaching a conclusion?

~ (checks my email) ~

Not as such apparently... my vigil continues...

Please note our submissions scheduling update. There's a number of good reasons for this, but the big one is the first: I've increasingly been experiencing a sense of burn out.
Schedule Update: we are closing to submissions on September 30th instead of the end of October to reduce staff burn out, and provide additional time to focus on the anthology launch and website performance updates.

We will reopen on January 1st, 2027.

This is the "we wanted to have a clown birthday party for our child, but without the clowns, so we hired a mime instead" of children's play toys.

Parents who buy this for their kids are terrible parents.

Anyways, I'm gonna end with, preorder my book for more technical break downs of why these clowns' fairytale scenarios are bullshit.

🔇 🔇 🔇 My book, Deep Unlearning, is now available for preorders! I don't know how people write so many books because this one took a lot out of me. It turns out, I had a lot to say 😂, with editors cutting out 50k of my words 🫣

I don't know which is funnier: the fact someone submitted a story I didn't like but I also suspected might be LLM generated; or the fact they emailed back angry we rejected it "in only 2 days; did you even read it?"

Which made me double check, and yep, 100% AI.

Don't rage email editors.

Hit me with the first line of your novel, published/finished or not.

"I was likely the last person in the world to hear about the appearance of the dead colossus floating over Grafton that morning."

"Bloody-Handed Coll. Coll Keeper of Triath. Coll the Twice Doomed. Coll King-Killer. Coll the Traitor. Heartless Coll. Coll Whose Blade Was the Thunderbolt. Coll who the Sun hated. Coll who buried the long summer."

Welcome to our latest Free Fiction Friday!

Z.D. Dochterman offers us a fabulous slipstream tale of Maria, the gas mask gangs, killer purple fog, patricide, blood metal music, and a cat named Korpse with a K. This story is punk and it rocks.

They were trying to gin up outrage at any politician backed by Piker, and instead they turned him into a beef cake pinup (and broke Grindr again as well).

I honestly know nothing about him, but it's interesting seeing how inept the GOP spin machine has become in the hands of Donnie's faithful.

Nostalgia. It's a hell of a drug.

Now people are waxing on about the joys of sodium street lighting over the newer LEDs. I have zero nostalgia for orange/yellow street lighting apparently. I prefer the newer LEDs which make it easier to see things and doesn't cast the world in a pumpkin pall.

I just saw the trailer for "You Can See Everything," the documentary about Elizabeth Holmes. Filmed with her approval in the weeks before her incarceration. I didn't realize it was her, I thought it was some creepy horror dramamentary. She's disturbingly earnest.

Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time was one of the greatest games I ever played. The entire family used to gather around the TV just to watch the game.

I hope the new version lives up to the original. The trailer looks VERY promising.

Let's see... seaweed processor? Rock bucker? Soldering doll house furniture that needed minor repairs before sale? Has to be one of those three, probably the furniture one.
Happy labor day (USA). What's one of the oddest paid job you've had? Mine was probably as a reader for a medical professor at Rutgers, whose eyes were failing. I read him many academic texts, as well as Samuel Butler's "The Way of All Flesh."
