I have been a LFC fan from the Fagan years and last year was the one year where I was absolutely ashamed to be one. The toxic red fans abusing Gakpo and Slot made me reconsider what fandom actually meant to me. The toxicity is less this year but it lingers on.

My sense is that people in general value scarcity (doh) and effort, and when things are perceive to be easy and cheap, support for it also drops.

We can simulate fish schools or ants in ways that solve complex problems (gradient detection, bridge building, nest selection) but no one would create this weird soul/no-soul dichotomy to argue they these that multi-agent swarms of extremely simple rules are “thinking”.
Once you’ve conceded that there’s nothing magic about humans or “living beings” that makes them the only entities allowed to think, it’s really hard to figure out an intellectually honest dividing line where the entities that are exercising creativity and solving complex problems aren’t thinking

I think the story here is that the cycle mix has been changed significantly by e-bikes (in 2024 Lime made up 15% of journeys and 33% of injuries and their revenue has doubled since) and even Lime's estimate is that 20% of their riders have never ridden before. So it's "who identifies as a cyclist?"
Truly the most fascinating Bluesky subtribe here are the 'cars are more dangerous. Therefore pedestrians should be relaxed about me hurting them' cyclists.

Really sad to hear about this. Rafael was not just a brilliant and original thinker, he was really one of the nicest and kindest person I have ever met. He was always patient to explain his ideas to a slower mind like mine, and curious to hear about my half cooked ideas. I will miss him.
Deeply saddened to learn that Rafael Sorkin is no more. One of the deepest and most original thinkers of quantum gravity and the pioneer of causal set theory, he was also among the nicest, gentlest physicists I have met.

A trans man in the UK has been banned in the workplace restrooms after he was forced to use the women's restrooms to comply with the new EHRC guidance. The women complained because he is visibly male and so they told him he can't use any bathroom.
