Hello, new friends! 👋

I'm Ben. I'm a software/product guy and one of the world's top Notion experts. I make software and currently run the NotionMastery.com program.

this is a bad take. I'm not gonna delete it because I believe in process value. At least 20 times a day a terrible take enters my head and usually I discard it or run it by someone who points out that it's based on information that's 24 hrs to 6 months out of date. Not this time.
“Dem landslide is the exogenous shock that finally pops the AI bubble” was not on my bingo card, but turning points in history rarely are

Beyond just not having an algorithm, it’s also important to have a community that wants to participate in sharing accurate information instead of primarily participating in make-believe play and sharing propaganda. People forget that, before algorithms and AI, social media is made of people.
They were right about Bluesky being a bubble: It’s a high-information bubble. I’m shocked how much more I know about what’s happening than people who still rely on other social media platforms for news. Not having an algorithm between you and direct information is crucial for an objective reality.
They’re saying being on Bluesky gives you an information advantage, which I can confirm since Bluesky is one of the only platforms where I get information anymore

Without the promise of scifi future tech carrying water for it, capital has nowhere to turn to excuse all its failings. “Its still good!” doesnt work when it cant deliver magitek to end climate change, toil, energy problems and get us to the stars. We are just, here, with the same problems it causes

Surprisingly quiet halloween on duty last night. Gave out a 100 glowsticks and played Thriller through the command truck's PA. Only two minor calls all night, one call I happened upon while being attached to the other! First time for everything in firefighting.

From having to read a lot of agent-derived code lately, the wildest pattern I see in agents is recreating parsers when there's a well-maintained library you could use that'd make your scripts quite pleasant while benefitting from
patches. Agents really want to DIY. More tokens, eh? 😉
Verbosity and overreach are still serious problems in coding agents like Claude Code. It even does it with UI designs. I say "I want these menu items", and it adds explanatory text for all of them. I say "Remove the explanatory text" and it adds the explanations to the menu items themselves.

As much as I am for getting rid of daylight savings in BC, this year is not the year that I want to wake up and not trust what time it is even more. I feel like I need to call several friends. It is very funny that my family in Seattle is now on a different time than us. Cascadia, wtf!

Defender PSA:

1. Today’s macOS update from Apple does NOT appear to remove the compromised eMudhra intermediates from /etc/ssl/cert.pem, as far as I can tell
2. Today’s macOS update from Apples DOES clobber manual changes to /etc/ssl/cert.pem and so you will need to reapply them
About the compromised eMudhra intermediate CAs - Apple Support
Apple is blocking the compromised certificates automatically. Mac administrators can take optional steps for some command-line tools.

I'm happy with my work's direction at the moment. I am working on a workshop on coding without agents and working with an organization that publishes data and informatics in the climate change space. And my partner is working with a notable university's design thinking program. Luck + principles.

I started self-id'ing last year and it's made me feel a lot happier being me and understanding why I have always been surrounded by neurodivergent partners and friends.
I don't have an autism diagnosis (to be fair, I never went to get checked), but it does remind me of when my ex called me a robot. That was at least over 14 years ago and it still stings when I think about it.

You have to directly connect w/ people at the company to get noticed. The same is true for hiring managers. I honestly think there is little point in submitting. I think companies often have more success attracting talent by noticing who their neurodivergent employees are already talking to online.
this is categorically insane

I am not surprised. I think humans are complex—immensely creative yet also incredibly crass when presented w/ opportunities to exploit systems. I won't try to deny it in myself—I've created and exploited digital systems for my benefit my whole career. It's why I'm a skeptic: AI's a mirror to desire.
Thank you. I was envisioning some kind of paint-by-numbers horror and am glad to hear that isn't the case. Still, surprised actual artists would make flyers that way.

My fav thing is people saying "wordpress is insecure because of AI hacking, I'm going to use a static site builder" while also running claude directly on their daily driver without even a virtual sandbox and connecting everything though MCP. 👌

Is there a middle ground for weapons that end the competition for good, and then after that the roboscorpions saunter off to the ocean and mend corals?
It genuinely does suck and is *bad* that it feels like there’s almost nowhere to go for people who 1. Want to work on robotics (like drones) and 2. Don’t want to build weapons.

Related: I’m still looking for leads and help on jobs, fellowships, and freelance contracts on drones, GIS, aid, disaster, OSINT, tech ethics, and journalism.

I simply will not work for evil people and/or weapons manufacturers, which is also why I haven’t had paying work since Trump 2.0 began.
Drone tech has so many incredible applications for so many industries and if you want to make any sort of living you have to work for an illiterate Nazi pervert dweeb who collects erotic anime figurines.

one thing i noticed at the art crawl this year is a number of fine artists using LLMs in their work. i spoke with one painter who said their neighbor had used mj to "recreate his style." I asked "how does that sit with you?" and he kind of waved over his face and said, "yeah, it's not... this/me"

one of the best things our area does is the sunshine coast art crawl.
visit studios, talk about/buy art, get to know all the cool people making things with their hands/hearts. @mariepoulin.com and i decided we're going to start creating a new body of art/music next year so we can join ca. 2028.

ed's really doing fantastic sense-making work in this space. i have honestly been desperate for this type of mindful technology pursuit and it feels born from an acknowledgement of our connection to the "natural" world and each other. thoughtful and inspiring stuff.

New video up! Kind of a follow-on from the last one, because a YouTube comment made me feel bad for the author and I think a lot of people are buying into the mindset that it conveyed. Things wander from there. Cool jackets are mentioned. Next one is a cybersecurity talk.

of all the categories of takes, "people used to make skilled art with meaning and no one does this any more" is among the worst. i've been guilty of this take as well; to me it's a sign of rising depression and despondency. it points to a need for desperate environmental change.
