Alleged geographer at the ⋂ of cities, technology, and climate adaptation. A reluctant polygon enthusiast, I occasionally work on computational geometry and spatial data algorithms, which I promise almost never to discuss.

How is it possible to write Declare, but also this? Much to consider.
My mom gave me this book with a summary that just keeps growing.

“They’re here before…” and other apparently endearing things old ladies on the bus say about your child which in fact imply that they are changelings from beyond the veil &c. I’ll have you know she received her forbidden knowledge telepathically from the cat, like all babies.

Somewhat surprised to find myself having joined Anthropic’s war on the Pope on the side of the Pope, but here we are.
I've heard people make claims that AI would lead to a new Renaissance, but I didn't imagine it'd happen like this:

All I will say about today’s MacArthur announcement is that I didn’t realise that “After Geoengineering” was a Verso book.

The internet continues to amaze, part whatever: a culturally hyperspecific part of my childhood (Spaghettieis), something I haven’t really thought about for the better part of 35 years, has suddenly become a topic of discussion on both Bsky and Mastodon.

MOBY’s app and data are so unreliable that I spent the afternoon setting up minute-resolution ingest for the whole network; instead of screaming at them I’m gonna build a time-varying birth-death Markov chain model (based on Gast et al, 2015) about it. I just want a bike for 10 minutes, twice a day.

Happy to announce that Bluesky-the-social-network mostly exists to facilitate my ATproto research, and it isn’t close. The more Americans scream at each other about politics, the more synthetic-fur enthusiasts post things my client blurs, the more Brazilians – you guys also post a lot! – the better.

Excellent, excellent, news.
Absolutely fucking amazing. Mike Harrison is on the Booker shortlist.
I thought every one of these books was amazing. I'd vote for the Marlon James book, because I really think it's one of the most stunning books I've ever read. But each of these is worthy in different ways. Really great crop of nominees.

Got some free wooden “educational toys” for the child from the university freecycle group. There has been some speculation that the previous owner was using them to “teach undergrads about fractions”.

Gauzy, innocent memories of seeing several people I (formerly) followed – all working in the sciences – posting earnest, restrained statements about donating 10 % (or something) of their salaries with Coefficient Giving, and feeling vaguely concerned by the language being used.

This is absolutely incredible. Just wonderful.
Turns out, the author just ... made them up 🤷‍♂️. I can't get over this. It really doesn't seem ok to me for someone to draw some squiggles, claim that they're illustrative of something in the real world, then act as though it's akin to evidence. The vibes you feel aren't data!

Probably the worst thing about the advent of the smartphone is that it killed Nokiawave as a genre, which in turn hastened the demise of Gitanes Maïs.

I am not particularly excited to find out what’s going to happen to the geospatial software ecosystem in the short term given that its most essential developer and maintainer (Even) has gone on (apparently indefinite) strike. If you depend on GDAL to do your work you should perhaps pay attention.
