Why are consultancies, university managers and government funders so keen to dispatch with subjects that time after time the data they cite suggest UK researchers are disproportionately good at? These are not, as a group, especially costly subjects. Why so hostile to the geese laying these eggs?

Published this 36 years ago. It was my 1988 PhD - submitted in 1987 (summer my son was born). PhD began in 1984. PhD at University of London LSE and UCL under supervision of Fred Rosen. Followed by Post Doc at University of Chicago Law School. I barely recognise it but am still rather proud of it.

In a world of dreadful billionaires, be Dolly
Dolly Parton did all the good she could, for all the people she could, for as long as ever she could.

From her legendary songwriting to the Imagination Library—which sent 1 million books a month to children across the country—she was the best of America.

Dolly, we'll miss your great heart.

@theguardian.com and BBC, and news media generally: do better at distinguishing between stories about individuals and stories about institutions. Don’t present a story about an individual as an insight into the institution. It’s lazy and unfair to the individual.

Prof Arday was hounded, and treated as a symbol of academia, not as an individual. Awful treatment by a media with an agenda against academia and EDI. I’m very sorry for his family and loved ones.

My department is hiring a lecturer or senior lecturer in philosophy. It's an open call in terms of research specialization, but we're keen to hire someone whose teaching/research speaks to PPE in some way.

This is a great job in a great department. Please help me spread the word!
