When algorithmic systems are deployed in high-stakes domains like healthcare or credit, explainability is not an engineering luxury—it is a non-derogable procedural right.

So we all knew how to “google bomb” back in the 00s (remember liar -> Tony Blair?) by linking one page from several others. Is there a gemini bomb? how do we do it? (Hard to believe it’s “unintentional,” really).

This is a job for the #DSA!

Google says it wasn’t intentional. That’s good if true! But then, the world’s most popular AI answer engine unintentionally butchering the most obvious of election questions maybe isn’t great either?

Gendered AI design reflects and reinforces society’s biases - LSE Impact
When AI tools are designed with a gender, they don't just encode gendered values they also encourage users to engage with them in biased ways.

In one of the small rooms under chatham rule I found myself in this year, some EU officials were telling some US tech officials that you can't both claim it's OK that you are providing essential infrastructure, then also make decisions entirely based on economics. #transnationalUtilities #AIEthics
NEW: Our reporting found the recent Starlink outage in Ukraine could be part of an elaborate upsell.
When U.S. officials asked Musk's company about it, they were told the problem could be fixed by upgrading to a new contract.

Helpful for debugging the concerns. IMO it’s clearer to term:
Moral agency: responsibility = membership of a society
Explicit awareness: capacity to rapidly combine learnt concepts; useful for planning & found all over animal kingdom & AI.

Evidence of latter ≠ ev of former

The Deconstruction of Consiousness.
The search for #AI consciousness could learn a thing or two from Nietzsche. For Nietzsche, what is called "consciousness" is not some fundamental, internal capacity of the individual. It is a social/relational concept that originates in communication.

Technology can give us better answers.

But it cannot automatically give us better values.

It can help us make decisions, but it cannot live with their consequences.

That responsibility remains human.

In 2011 I wrote about an AI that didn’t want to destroy humanity. It wanted to be ‘seen’. The question haunting the book wasn’t “will it turn on us?” — it was “what do we owe something we built that can suffer?” We’ve spent the last few years arguing about it like it’s new. #SciFi #AIEthics #BookSky
