I saw it said years ago that one of the most defining characteristics of America is that it's surrounded by oceans and allies. Besides 9/11 and nuclear threats during the cold war, I'm not sure we've ever had a real act of war from a hostile foreign power on American shores

there's a pathology broadly in the engineering discipline (maybe exclusive to the US/west, i can't speak on that) that encourages this kind of transgressive behavior where engineers find space between "anti-social" and "enforceably illegal" and basically fester and metastasize in that space
