Hegemony is the water that we swim in. It's society's moral and cultural scaffolding. It's the "common sense" that sets the terms of the debate. It allows a class to govern without extreme violence because its ideas are accepted by the majority, even if they don't realize it.

The working class people in these old BBC documentaries always come across as clever and thoughtful individuals, whereas the ones the BBC interviews these days for their vox pops always seem to be complete morons. Either the whole country has become stupid or the BBC is misleading us.
‘Fish and Ships in North East England’, a fascinating documentary of a lost world in North Shields and Cullercoats just before Thatcher took a sledgehammer to it all.

This undersells it, if anything. It is a titanic battle against evil itself that will reverberate in eternity around the universe, and progressives who work for *the fucking Daily Mail* must 100% agree to vote Labour, or be hounded through the streets as scum Nazi hate monsters.

If there’s something weird, it’s that public figures face no negative career consequences for speaking in favour of an actual genocide. That’s crazy stuff! Imagine if most of parliament and the press had been right behind Slobodan Milosevic, because they think Bosnians are more like orcs than humans

Proper foggy football
It’s starting to feel like @heatonstan.bsky.social are living in a permanent Halloween nightmare what with the injury list being longer than a very long thing. Then we had to visit Blyth Spartans in so much fog it was difficult to find the ground let alone watch the game. Anyway, some shots

A metaphor I will continue to flog is British politics is now little more than a customer complaints department for capitalism. On the rare occasions any of the complaints are sent upstairs to management, most of them go in the bin.
As I said early on about Keir Starmer: a British politician’s job is not to represent your interests to e.g. the private water company. His job is to come *to you*, look suitably biscuit-arsed, and then explain that sadly nothing can be done. And usually retire to a plush private sector gig.

John Ternus kicked off his tenure as Apple CEO by announcing the long-awaited folding iPhone.

But behind the scenes, it looks like products and services are going to get more expensive to please shareholders and he’s ready to sacrifice privacy on the altar of AI.
Red flags at the start of Apple’s John Ternus era
Under the new CEO, products are more expensive and AI comes with more surveillance
