Scent-based interactions are crucial for ecosystem services (bees pollinate crops) and preservation of biodiversity (scent guides monarchs to milkweed). Scientists are studying how humans are changing the chemical signals of plants and animals and the impacts: e360.yale.edu/features/sme.... 🌎

A year ago today my book ‘Urban Plants’ was released into the wild. I could never have predicted the wonderful response it’s had, and I’m thrilled Mark Avery crowned it his ‘Book of 2025’ (markavery.info/2025/11/30/t...). If you’ve bought a copy, thank you! #UrbanPlants #UrbanGaze 1/4…

Thanks to @daveslade42.bsky.social this species new to the UK in the last few years, was on my radar: Coccomyces delta. Found on fallen Laurus nobilis, Bay leaves. Ascomata/fruiting bodies often triangular. Recorded 30/05 Vale of Glamorgan VC 41. If you have Bay, have a look. @britmycolsoc.org.uk

Visited Mynydd Ruthin - the sun brought out some beautifully fresh Small Pearl-bordered Fritillary butterflies. On my casual wander (with dog) I saw 11 individuals, so I'm sure there are more there. These seem to be the first records since 2000, so really positive news. @savebutterflies.bsky.social

Genista angelica, Petty Whin, recorded at a nearby Common in Bridgend County VC41 Glamorgan. It is doing really well here this year with 150+ small plants plus some nice large clumps. @bridgend.gov.uk @plantlifeuk.bsky.social @bsbibotany.bsky.social

Today's garden find: larva of a Drinker moth. These overwinter as a larva and, when fully grown, will pupate then emerge as an adult July/August. Popped it somewhere safe #teammoth @savebutterflies.bsky.social

I think we have a new grassland type! Bird’s-eye Primrose grassland on Sulber, Ingleborough today. The number of Primula farinosa in flower was jaw-dropping. Beautiful. I never dreamt this grassland could be this good when I first visited in 1995. Then just the odd Primula flowering in flushes

The colour & smell of native Bluebells, Hyacinthoides non-scripta, at this local Common land were amazing today. Scaly Male-fern, Dryopteris affinis agg., Cream Wave moth, Scopula floslactata, & the orchid Common Twayblade, Neottia ovata also spotted. @valelnp.bsky.social @bsbibotany.bsky.social

Spotted these structures on a local South Wales beach. Constructed by the bristleworm, Lagis koreni, from just a single layer of sand grains. The black coal dust made them easier to spot. Spectacular to think that a bristleworm could make this. Nature is amazing! @wtsww.bsky.social #marinelife

Last April (2025) our moth trap in the Vale of Glamorgan, South Wales had this beautiful female Emperor in it plus eggs she'd laid. We released her and looked after the eggs. On 20th April 2025 the eggs hatched. These photos show the journey @savebutterflies 1/4

A book to add to my list: highlighting the fact that female birdsong has, up until now, not been studied. Also interesting looking at the vocabulary around female vs male bird descriptions.

A late #wildflowerhour post celebrating 2 stunning yellow woodland flowers seen today, with wonderful scientific names: Lamiastrum galeobdolon and Euphorbia amygdaloides (Yellow archangel and Wood spurge). I love the acid yellow flowers of the spurge - and so do the larvae of the Drab Looper moth.

Glad we checked the garden waste bag before use - it was in our front garden with damp soil in the bottom. This beautiful Common toad was hanging about in it. We are very lucky to have them in our garden and field. Look at those eyes and that skin! Relocated somewhere safe.

There's just something about oil beetles. The coastal area I live in the Vale of Glamorgan is a real stronghold for the Black Oil Beetle, Meloe proscarabaeus, I even have them in my garden. But head inland a short distance & the dominant species is the Violet Oil Beetle, M. violaceus, like this one.

Turned a stone at Aberthaw & came across 2 beautiful limestone-loving Lapidary snails Helicigona lapicida. The Vale of Glamorgan limestone walls are also wonderful for lichens - I'm going to learn some this year with the help of this highly recommended new book @britishlichensociety.org.uk

Pollinators on shrubs at a local garden centre today: Buff-tailed Bumblebee Bombus terrestris, Early Bumblebee B. pratorum, a Hoverfly Eristalis pertinax, & a Bluebottle Calliphora. There's plenty of research into gardens being important for pollinators. Anyone aware of any about garden centres?
