We have a bit of a special announcement...

A few months ago, one of the finest wetlands in the Lake District came up for sale - It is a SSSI (site of special scientific interest).

We have officially completed the purchase of the site!

We are so excited, and grateful for the opportunity!

Oh. My. Word. WE HAVE DONE IT! 🥳🎉

In 2020 we worked with Natural England to carry out a green hay transfer from Sandybeck Meadow SSSI & SAC onto the Loweswater meadows, with an ultimate target being to get Greater Butterfly Orchid established.

Today, was the day I found the first one!!

Near-threatened in Britain (<15 sites), so buzzing to find bird’s-foot sedge (Carex ornithopoda) on this limestone pavement in Cumbria!

These pavements take 1000s of years to form as rain cuts deep cracks, creating niches for rare wildlife - this sedge being one of them 😍🌱

A couple of #tinyplants for this week's wildflower hour from yesterday's visit to Farleton Knott in South Cumbria...

Thyme-leaved Sandwort (Arenaria serpyllifolia) and Mountain Melick (Melica nutans)

Many of our hedgerow-verges are laden with Water Avens, Geum rivale in this part of the #LakeDistrict, which are just coming into flower now.

Here it is on our own little stretch of verge!

Two Scilla section Chionodoxa:

forbesii - Forbes'-Glory-of-the-Snow (L)

luciliae - Lucile's-Glory-of-the-Snow (R)

I much prefer the latter for some reason, I think the paler, large flowers look superb.

A reliable indicator of truly ancient habitats - today marks the first time I’ve ever seen properly wild daffodils (Narcissus pseudonarcissus subsp pseudonarcissus)!

This huge population was in a beautiful riparian ancient woodland in Cheshire and it’s made my whole month! 😍🌱

Not on theme for this week's #Wildflowerhour, because I stumbled upon a lovely big patch of Opposite-leaved Golden Saxifrage, Chrisosplenium oppositifolium.

Delicate and unassuming - but delightful.

The first Daffodils are out at Wild Lakeland HQ!

These are the cultivar 'Tete-a-Tete' - being very popular and widely planted. They are consistently the first variety to flower here, even ahead of Rijnveld's Early Sensation.

Must admit I'm a bit mad on Daffodils so I am going to start a thread with all the varieties I have planted at @wildlakeland.bsky.social HQ . In order as they come into flower...

Starting with Narcissus 'tete-a-tete'.

Small, early and delightful!
