This right here. The whole idea behind this software is to hide the costs - financial, environmental, moral.

People get stunned like animals in the night if you make those real
There is a bleak sort of pleasure in telling people who bring up AI in casual conversation, “Actually, I’m one of the authors AI stole from. Not an exaggeration. The judge ordered them to send me a check.” It hits them different when it’s a real person saying it.

The Iran war is speeding up the shift away from fossil fuels.

That's one reason I'm hopeful about electrification. I told @news.abc.net.au why, in a piece alongside Fatih Birol @iea.org and António Guterres. 🧵

Unintended consequences of war in Iran are helping the climate
The Iran war is turbocharging global electrification. But experts say the global grid needs to roughly double in size, as infrastructure bottlenecks prevent a clean energy revolution.

This has been an open secret in Australia for some time, with the federal government going to great lengths to *appear* as if they have effective climate policy, while rubber stamping mine after mine. It's disgraceful, and they are not held to account for it.
The planning contradiction is impressively neat: it accepts that 809Mt of GHG emissions will worsen global warming. It says leaving the coal in the ground would make a difference

…then approves the mine anyway.

Climate science only matters up until the decision.

But GenAI is so unique: it barely existed 3 years ago; we all lived our lives normally. Yet heavy use still gets excused?

Did you know that producing one pound of beef is 25-50x worse for climate change than burning a pound of coal?

In fact, it’s one of the most polluting things we can consume.

And grass-fed beef is usually *even worse* — thanks to its much higher land use and methane emissions.
