My colleague @lisasmartmp.bsky.social tried to get the government to cap political donations last week, and they stupidly ignored the calls. I fear that we are now past the point of no return and at the beginning of an arms race, with parties chasing bigger and more outlandish donations.

Capping donations to political parties was a Liberal Democrat manifesto commitment in 2024, and Lib Dem MPs tabled amendments in April to make this happen.

Peers will press the same case in the Lords - so that our democracy is protected and everyone's voice can be fairly heard.

I hope Stella Creasy is proud of whatever private concession she got for dropping her amendment on capping political donations.

imagine being a teenager excited to visit a faraway country and play cricket, and you find yourself hiding in your hotel room hoping the thugs knocking your door don’t try to break it down

then imagine being an asylum seeker put into a hotel room hoping the same thing

we should be so ashamed

this is just so outrageous. we cannot have a country where any group of non-white people seen in public - whether a visiting youth cricket team, or a group of British nationals, or, yes, asylum seekers - gets a mob sent after them, and the government just ignores it

I wish this all the success but I hope they focus less on keeping people safe (as important as that is) and more on the glaring legal absurdity that political parties – organisations formed by beliefs – can’t make determinations based on beliefs.
