These guys ignore that publicly funded academic research is responsible for much of the foundational knowledge that allows private companies to do this stuff.

Trump's tone of voice reads like he's telling the funniest story he knows. And everyone in the audience is laughing. American democracy - the founding, the constitution, rule of law, checks and balances, representative government ALL OF IT - is just a joke to these people.
