It's been truly depressing to watch the gutting of SciAm--and of course, terrible to watch so many great journalists (and friends) lose their jobs amid the meltdown.
The Fall of “Scientific American”
When the beloved science publication got too political, its corporate owners stepped in. Now its future is uncertain.

Ugh I HATE THIS. I loved Mass Effect, I know Bioware has been gutted long before this shutdown, but it still sucks.
I now have permission to share something I hoped would be revealed with much more fanfare

I spent more than 3 years as one of the writers of #MassEffect4

It was one of the greatest privileges & GLORIOUS challenges of my life

So when I say I am devastated by the end of #MassEffect I REALLY mean it

Obsessed with Damascus goats lately. They look like they were created by H. R. Giger. They both looks and sound stupid as hell. An utter catastrophe of an animal. I love them.

This is a really thoughtful thread about the Linux kernel and why the LLM decision is a symptom of some existential issues in the FOSS community

I am too basic for Mastadon, so I figure it deserves to be boosted on the OTHER unpopular social network.

The LLM part is bad news but it isn't the sign. It's the talking about planning succession while simultaneously complaining that nobody new wants to learn, that's the sign. Y'all the kernel is in dee...

No one asked the Oakland Review of Books to make a voting guide, and we made one anyway.

Today we start off with the ballot propositions and the regional transit measure: www.oaklandreviewofbooks.org/orbs-totally...

The passive voice is very funny here, I’m betting “he was told” by Rupert Murdoch.
As Trump weighed endorsing Ken Paxton this spring, he was told that damaging revelations were likely to surface, according to people familiar with the conversations. Months later, the decision to endorse the Texas attorney general is looking like Trump’s biggest gamble of the midterms.

The Las Vegas Strip turned into a river over the weekend as Tropical Storm Rachel dumped 1.08 inches of rain on the city in a single day, tying an October record that had stood since 1947.

Footage captured Sunday by Paul Contino shows the apocalyptic scene, with floodwaters rising above his knees.

I’m ok. Make no mistake: this is an attempt to target political enemies and weaponize federal law enforcement. For ten years, Trump has targeted me with baseless lies and smear campaigns. This is just the latest escalation in his campaign of political intimidation.

I will not be silenced.
