Tokyo Seven Roses by Hisashi Inoue, translator Jeffrey Hunter. I don't read fat 2-volume novels set during the war, but...it's so oddly not miserable, and the main character's voice is so engaging that you won't care that the plot about saving the Japanese writing system doesn't even start till v. 2

I'll go first, and it's abso-LUT-ely THE CITY IN GLASS by Nghi Vo. There are moments from that book that live in my blood and wake me from the dark.

why can't we have nice things😩
I have had vastly different jobs but I don't know if any were that odd...probably the time I worked for a guy who bred poison dart frogs for the pet trade? spent a large percentage of the time raising fruit flies for frog food.
Happy labor day (USA). What's one of the oddest paid job you've had? Mine was probably as a reader for a medical professor at Rutgers, whose eyes were failing. I read him many academic texts, as well as Samuel Butler's "The Way of All Flesh."
