Happy PARK(ing) Day to all who observe.
Jan Gehl wrote: “A good city is like a good party — people stay longer than really necessary because they are enjoying themselves." That's why I love PARK(ing) Day- get outside, take back the streets, and party. lloydalter.substack.com/p/its-parkin...
It’s PARK(ing) Day because streets are for people
At least in Toronto, this icon of tactical urbanism is still going strong.

Last night, Manhattan Community Board 9 approved a resolution asking DOT to lower speed limits to 20 mph across the entire district.

This is the fifteenth community board to pass such a resolution. The boards asking for safer speeds represent more than two million New Yorkers.

It’s underrated how many of the cardinal achievements of modernity are things that allow for you to interact with people you don’t personally trust.

“Contracts are enforceable” and “my safety doesn’t depend on someone being willing to avenge me” really changes the ways you can live.

I find it so shocking to learn that the takahē has never won the @forestandbird.bsky.social #NewZealand Bird of the Year that this iconic chonkermaxx megarail gets my vote this year. #BOTY
Bird of the Year voting closes on Sunday so I'll post a COOL TAKAHĒ FACT daily until then to encourage everyone to VOTE TAKAHĒ. It has somehow never won!

FACT: the takahē is the largest living member of the RAIL FAMILY of birds, so it is the official railfan birb

The following public transport projects for NZ should be completely uncontroversial:

- light rail in Auckland and Wellington
- completing the electrification of the North Island Main Trunk and sparking the East Coast Main Trunk
- Extending Te Huia to Tauranga and the Capital Connection to Whanganui
There *should* be light rail under construction from the railway station to Island Bay and Miramar but nooooo instead the worst people, obsessed with “four lanes to the planes”, are impeding the capital from becoming what it ought to be
I’m exceptionally jelly about Auckland’s new infrastructure and just so depressed that the government hates Pōneke so much that we don’t get nice new ways to get around without cars without fighting tooth and nail to get 10% of what’s needed.
