I think everyone should learn how to diagram a sentence

And I genuinely believe that this is part of how we save humanity

Because too many people don’t understand complex sentences anymore

there won't even be pronouns anymore, there will be entirely new grammatical elements previously unknown to linguistics

The UKLO still need more markers for this year's Linguistics Olympiad - marker registration now extended to Friday 6th Nov! #linguistics 🧪🧪
The annual United Kingdom Linguistics Olympiad (UKLO) is coming around - you can sign up as a volunteer marker until 2nd Nov, for marking 19th-30th Nov. I've been doing this since 2015 and it's normally quite fun (I like to have a go at the paper first)

welcome - UKLO
UKLO = UK Linguistics Olympiad Welcome to UKLO! We run an annual competition in which school children solve problems based on real languages. It's a test of skill and insight, not of how well you know...

While the linguists are here, my field of application is systemic functional linguistics, which i'd love to discuss. I have multiple projects underway using principles from it, and augmentative communication work draws from it heavily.

I did the wrong thing with my linguistics degree.
Today someone asked “what can you do with a linguistics degree” and I thought of a friend who dressed drones up in hawk costumes to see if squirrels have different cries based on direction of a predator to warn their little squirrel buddies. They do!

Anyway so you can do that

Omg linguistics meets animal science? What about figuring out what the whales 🐳 are saying?

Conflating simplicity and minimum description length is probably the thing that annoys me the most when reading linguistics papers.
