Pope Leo XIV’s mother, Mildred Prevost, was a Black Creole contralto from Chicago who sang solos at Mundelein College in 1940.

In 1972, her son asked whether women wanted equality with men.

“We’re already better,” she told him.
The Black Creole Mother Who Made the Pope
Mildred Prevost died in 1990. In October, as Pope Leo XIV, her son told a Vatican synod what she had said in 1972 when he asked if women wanted equality with men, she responded “we’re already better.”

So fucking dope. I had a poem published in Torch, a journal for Black women, told from my grandma’s perspective as a young girl whose mom had just died of tuberculosis whose dad & older relatives spoke Creole but would keep it from the kids & not allow them to speak it, called “Know No Creole.”
