The cleaners (labor) are gonna make more than the hosts (rent seekers)! This is terrible.
6h If you've considered owning/starting an Airbnb, I cannot express how wild Airbnb is to actual hosts. Just a quick example for a last minute/discounted stay at our cabin (and yes, we selected this suggested rate and yes we could change it). I'm a Superhost, and Airbnb's last-minute discount is on for tomorrow. With the 15% last-minute discount, it drops to $135. (Again, we could change this.) Then I looked at what the guest would actually pay for that one night: $345 (yes, really). By the time cleaning, Airbnb's service fees, and taxes come out, we would take home less than $90 to allow someone to use/abuse our home and wear and tear on it (almost every guest does). Our cleaners would make more on that stay than we would for one hour of cleaning. One thing I don't think people understand, is we cannot change the cleaning fee. The cleaners do not discount the rate because it's a last-minute clean or because it's only one night. So we can't lower that rate and lose more money on that. This is an option on Airbnb to lower the cleaning fee for a one-night stay but Airbnb already (as of recently) takes 15% of the cleaning fee - and they have NOTHING to do with the cleaners - hiring, suggestions, etc. So the guest sees $345 and assumes the host is getting rich. The host has offered a discount and ends up with the smallest share of the money. It's wild when you look at numbers this way. Hosts, are your numbers looking like this too? And guests, would that $345 have surprised you? I am only sharing this because I believe in transparency and also curious if guests/hosts have thoughts?

I don't have a sub, but I hope this is not going on about Lonesome Dove of all novels being some hypermasculine celebration of cowboy hypermasculinity. Because the novel is a scathing critique of all that. In ways the famous TV show often missed. The book is an astonishing, beautiful work of art.

A more challenging question can be asked: If more books were published by men with explicitly masculine themes, would there actually be a wider male readership? It’s the old chicken-and-egg dilemma. The audience won’t emerge because the product isn’t there, and the product isn’t there because the audience is elsewhere. Men, obviously, can read and enjoy books by women, but there is the sticky biological reality that, on balance, women will probably prefer reading women, and men may prefer reading men. Boys, especially, seem to long for male teachers and role models in the classroom. As they age, and if they want to read, they might be drawn to the fiction of writers like Ernest Hemingway, Raymond Carver, and McMurtry. They might want literature that, at the bare minimum, seems masculine.
