Yakima is a city of about 100,000 in central Washington State.

The community is tragically disengaged. A rare opportunity is here as the Comprehensive Plan is about to be updated.

Urbanist goals face strong headwinds, but we can have something better if people SHOW UP.

A Seattle PD officer ran his son's information through Washington State's law enforcement criminal history database (ACCESS).

Not supposed to search people in ACCESS without a valid law enforcement purpose. He got a written reprimand.

Sara Nelson abstained from voting as a council member, now abstains from research and writing for her NIMBY slop factory.

I note, but do not admire, the consistency of the grift.

That said, I wish we had Seattle's problem of a progressive wave big enough to generate this level of dumb opposition.

Gee thanks Wilson. As if we needed another reason to never go to Seattle. There was already too much public art, good transit and bike infrastructure.

I think The Urbanist is such a singular organization in the way it combines journalism, advocacy, and community building. It’s a big part of why Seattle is transforming so rapidly (mostly in good ways!), and it’s why I’ve been a member for years. Consider doing likewise!
It's The Urbanist's Fall Member Drive, and we're fundraising to expand our team so Doug, Ryan, and the rest of our team can keep bringing you the regional coverage you deserve. Donate to help us hit our member goal, read ad-free, and support our work! www.theurbanist.org/membership/

Last night we celebrated the opening of our new dedicated bus lane for the 8 bus on Denny by doing the obvious thing: racing it again. Last summer, Seattleites raced the bus on foot and beat it. This time around, with the lane up and running, it wasn’t even close.

5 secs up on IG and already roadies commenting to tell me what I did wrong

Just proves my point: if it's not safe to follow the road markings it's a dangerous design and bad engineering. It's not designed to accommodate the most vulnerable users using it: kids on bikes, who have no alt route
City prioritizes parking over safety & drivers are too entitled or ignorant to give bikes more than a few inches of passing room. This is how we get sideswiped. This road is one of the most popular for kids on ebikes. Sick of the moral panic around them when we can't even get a continuous bike lane.

Here in Yakima, the Plaths (wealthy agriculture family) are throwing their money around as usual. Peter Plath is in for $35,000.

A few others, mostly business owners. But worth repeating the quoted post that this doesn't mean their business or its employees support what the owners do🧵:
