Oh my, whoever could have predicted this‽ #ColossalBio is backtracking on it's time frame to #DeExtinct the mammoth –– I'm shocked! Shocked I say! (The article also discusses our TP53 and LIF6 work, and #PetosParadox but doesn't mention either of us.) 🤷 🦣 😂

“I hate to say this, because I don’t want to call the mammoth a product,” says Lamm, “but it will be a better product because of our deeper analysis of what truly made a mammoth a mammoth.”

Only if you didn't validate your antibodies when you ordered them (which like, if you didn't, yikes)

We could also all just stop doing fucking western blots lol, they're such a bad, qualitative, poorly reproducible assay that should've been dumped for better options a decade or two ago.

In May it was big news when 100+ suspicious images were found in Thermo Fisher's catalog. Now, that number has expanded dramatically to 18,000+, thanks to some arduous searching by @reeserichardson.bsky.social.

My reporting on the massive trove and its implications for antibody reliability:
More than 18,000 questionable images found in antibody catalogues of 15 companies
Science sleuth’s findings raise questions for researchers working to improve the reliability of commercial antibodies.

This is what we have found so far in mammoths (but we keep sequencing additional mammoths, so it might be we’ll find more pathogens in the future):

Oh, #ColossalBio has at least one pending patent, that plaragizes a figure from one of our papers: their Fig. 1A vs our Fig. 9A

It's really obvious that Colossal is a marketing grift to extract VC cash. They have constant media strategies but no products, no patents, and no research publications!

Surprised to discover that Thermo Fisher appears to show a fake western blot for the validation of one of their p53 antibodies. I've added a diagram to show the very similar bands. This does not appear to be one of the "published figures" but their own internal data.

What this 'press' article doesn't seem to get is that Vinny criticizes out of a place of genuine desire to make science more accessible and less hand-wavy bullshit. @itiscolossal.bsky.social is gonna make fake promises and cause more mistrust in science.
