My day yesterday was ruined by heartbreak. My day today feels... extremely mixed. I don't know what this will look like, going forward, but this article mirrors my own thoughts very well.
Yesterday's news about Jacob Geller broke my heart, so much that I couldn't stop dwelling on it all day. In an effort to make sense of this horrific news and my admittedly complicated feelings about it, here is my article on the Jacob Geller situation:

Earlier this week, a friend noticed Jacob Geller’s book, How A Game Lives, sitting amongst my living room shelves. Under almost any other circumstances, this would have been an exciting invitation for...

They follow you.

We are.
survivors of sexual violence are constantly asked to sacrifice our safety and wellbeing on the off chance that people who've committed literal torture might at some point have had a change of heart. when will our safety, wellbeing, dreams, aspirations, futures, or peace of mind matter?

Thread - this framing is one I think more folks should default to as they talk about what the big tech companies.

They talk a lot about values and mission and The Future, but what they actually do is almost always what you’d predict from looking at the incentives inherent in their business models.
When I have this conversation, someone usually mentions that we give Apple and Google a lot of our data too. That's true. We tend to talk about whether you can "trust" these companies. But I think it's more useful to talk about incentives. Who has the *incentive* to screw you over.

This is quite cool. My university is the first organisation in the world to force Microsoft to allow us to turn off copilot summaries in Word 365, after a backlash against it from staff (including, very vocally, me). That cannot have been easy for our heroic IT people so hats very much off to them!

Reorganizing my books has so far taken 4 hours, resulted in 2 liquid spills (no books were harmed), broken one bookshelf (I fixed it), and overheated both myself and my partner a great deal. But all the fiction is in alphabetical order by author now!

Republicans aren't just saying they will kill or institutionalize or forcibly detransition all trans people: they are actively and overtly *campaigning on promising it*.

And every day, cis people are saying that trans folks are fearmongering, overreacting, or don't know what genocide is.

Things were already abysmal on this front. Much like everything Trumperdink's administration has 'improved', it has gotten so much worse.
Trump rescinded prior guidance on Title IX during his first year in office, then put out a new regulation that experts warned would retraumatize survivors and offer perpetrators impunity.

It literally had provisions designed to allow confessed perpetrators to get away with rape.
A New Title IX Rule Essentially Allows Accused Sexual Assailants to Hide Evidence Against Them
A mere three months after its release, the DeVos administration’s new Title IX rule goes into effect on Friday, August 14. With the rushed timeline...

In the time of enshittification of, well, everything the role of higher education is not to teach students how to enshittificate more efficiently. It is to provide them with hard skills like source criticism, languages, writing or critical reading that will allow them to survive all of this.

Dems replaced action on trans rights with hollow statements, then dropped those statements, then embraced anti-trans rhetoric. Now supporting anti-trans laws and blocking pro-trans ones.

At every step the "they're betraying us" radicals were correct and "be patient" liberals were completely wrong.

Reminder that in (homophobic) '94 as Dookie was blowing up, Green Day picked queercore Pansy Division to open for them + a lot of venues pressured them to drop them as openers --

Green Day told the venues they wouldn't play if PD didn't - and the venues (mostly? all?) backed down.

huh.
