The reduction of politics to voting is part of the 50 year neoliberal project whose foremost goal is to make you think of yourself as an atomized individual and not as a member of a polity.

But Carney found a way to make this *even worse*, turning over key aspects of the back-end of Canada's military to Palantir, the tech company most closely aligned with Trump, whose CEO boasts that his company was founded to kill America's political enemies:

the guy who said he wanted to chair the harvard department of eugenics and race science??? people are signing a letter in support of his right to bully black men to death in pursuit of his dream of eliminating black people entirely?? just making sure i’m reading this right!!
There’s a petition signed by more than one hundred academics (& counting!) in support of Nathan Cofnas—the racist who instigated the pile on that led to J. Arday’s death—because he lost his postdoc. Apparently there’s nothing a white man can do that deserves consequences.

So Richard Tice, should farmers just "enjoy" low crop yields? Should the thousands who've died from the heatwaves just "enjoy" their premature deaths? What about the families whose homes have burned down in the wildfires?

The momentum of this issue is in the wrong direction. The line should be: We're roasting, we're exposed to wildfires, we're experiencing drought, and these nutters aren't prepared to keep British people safe.

Look, put simply, people should not be comfortable saying that in public and the way to fix society runs directly through making them afraid to say it again.
In the wake of Arday's death, Nathan Cofnas (who led the X mob against him) states his motivation. Beyond whistleblowing, he states that after a 'revolution' removes professors like Arday, it will open opportunities for him to become 'head of the department of eugenics and race science at Harvard'.

I think the lesson here is “if you don’t invest in infrastructure then everything gets worse and gradually falls apart, and governments have to do humiliating announcements about everything being fucked and broken”. That applies to prisons, same as it has to everything else.

I can't think of a track of his I didn't love. RIP William Orbit.
RIP William Orbit, who produced several indelible hits for other people (Ray of Light, Pure Shores, Tender) and some beautiful music of his own, like this tune with a very young Beth Orton. One of the people who defined the sound of the 90s

Is “pragmatic” the new, “grown up” word? Andy, there’s nothing “pragmatic” about drilling for more oil & gas - to even consider it with the planet literally on fire is total madness. How many times must we say it will do nothing for energy bills or security? It would be an act of utter recklessness

Economists, think tanks and commentators like Jim O'Neill on #bbcpm keep saying UK welfare spending is "out of control." The BBC reports it uncritically. The Resolution Foundation, one of the UK's most respected economic research bodies, looked at the actual data. Thread. 🧵
Jim O'Neill, ex Goldman's banker, is part of the problem. Regularly prognosticates on what's best for the financial markets, & now what Burnham's policies in govt should be, on #r4today, but never mentions the restraint on corporate environmental externalities we need to prevent climate catastrophe
It's incredible to me that even Thatcher recognised the approaching climate catastrophe in 1988, and since then, not only have we not prevented further global heating from being baked in, but we have actually accelerated it because of fosssil fuel lobbying and capitalism.
