9/12 The blue sky, the perfect day in the park, people gathered to picnic and play frisbee. But you turned 180 and saw downtown billowing with black smoke and gradually, the acrid smell reached you and never left. You swept the terrace every day and still the grey ash gathered.

Remember the tables with paper and crayons beside the band shell in Central Park where children could go to draw. So many just scribbled clouds of smoke because that's what they could see on 9/11.

North Sea drilling makes no economic or energy security sense - but “the policy could scarcely be better designed to give the final push to voters who are minded – after so many disappointments since 2024 – to abandon Labour for a progressive alternative”
Is Burnham trying to appease Trump? Or Reform? What other reason is there for these North Sea oil plans? | George Monbiot
Climate catastrophe is on our doorstep – yet Labour’s impending approval of further drilling will bring more pain for negligible gains, says Guardian columnist George Monbiot

A dark blizzard of disinformation is warping the public’s perception of our great city.

But we know the truth: our homicide rate is lower than every major US city, neighbourhood crimes are down and we’ve been ranked #1 city in the world 11 years in a row.

We must fight back against troll army’s lies about London

I think what Badenoch meant to say here is: “British employers are dependent on welfare to subsidise a massively underpaid workforce” - particularly when you consider that around 40% of claimants are actually in work.

But that’s just me splitting hairs, I suppose.

Essential thread.
90 years ago, Parliament responded to the rise of Oswald Mosley's Blackshirts by passing the Public Order Act, which banned political uniforms, private militias and the threat of force for political objects.

The debates make very resonant reading today. Here's the Liberal Robert Bernays. (Short 🧵)
