I've seen a considerable number of Millennials who love Canva. My best guesses are it's free, pretty easy to use, and they have decent templates. I'm not sure what comparable alternative exists. Maybe Adobe Express?

There's a book on ed tech history. It only goes up to the 90s, but basically, every decade there was some technology that people thought would completely change education and it didn't. Lots of money, time, and stress- the book is pretty boring, because it's basically the same story each chapter.

Sometimes, people actively engage with doing worse (or the worst) too.
