Family first, understanding reality at its most fundamental second. Also sports and good food.

In my day job I study the structure of brains in beings, and the structure of beings with brains.

Many seem to think inactive neurons cannot contribute anything to the conscious experience a brain specifies in a given moment.

Isn't this similar to saying that the blank/white spaces within and between letters in this post contribute nothing to the meaning specified by the pixels on this screen?

A depressing sign of the times...
Neuromatch has been denied our Office of Foreign Assets Control "Iran license" renewal. We had renewed successfully before, but now our request is “inconsistent with current U.S. foreign policy.”

I am absolutely gutted by this denial.
We have difficult news to share.

Neuromatch's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) license renewal, which has allowed us to include participants residing in Iran since 2020, has been denied by the United States Government.

🎉 📜 NEW #PREPRINT !! 📜 🎉

Spearheaded by Adam Barrett we tried to tackle some of the challenges of IIT.

We confront aspects worth delving into, with an incredible team of collaborators, inc. Pedro Mediano, @frosas.bsky.social, Daniel Bor, Lionel Barnett, and @anilseth.bsky.social.
Integrated information theory: the good, the bad and the misunderstood
The integrated information theory of consciousness (IIT) is uniquely ambitious in proposing a mathematical formula, derived from apparently fundamental properties of conscious experience, to describe ...

Israel’s parliament has passed a discriminatory death penalty bill that targets Palestinians.

This bill aims to execute Palestinian detainees quickly and with limited scrutiny.

The Israeli parliament should immediately repeal this discriminatory bill.

I've seen some similar projects, but IMO this seems to better capture some of the fine-grained detail

Recently read through Kleiner and Hoels papers on falsification, substitution, and their impact on physicalistic theories of consciousness (and now, on LLM consciousness or lack thereof). Any good articles discussing these papers or take them further? #consciousness

We're forming cells.

We're sheltering and feeding those at risk.

We're setting up structures beyond the state.

This isn't protest. It's not quite revolution. It feels like harm mitigation as we do it, but maybe it's building our capacity for some beauty we can't see from here.

I wish there was a good way to write about the difference between "protestors", as in people who mean to be where they are, making a political statement, and "protestors", as in people reacting with reasonable horror and compassion as they witness state violence.

Trump claims world peace is at stake if he doesn't get to buy greenland. I believe him: he could start a third world war over it.

He just added a punitive 10% tarif on several European countries, which increases to 25 on June unless we agree he should buy greenland.

Listen to my brilliant friend and colleague present our work on the link between the structure of experiences with that of the world

Does the meaning of an experience differ whether it's dreamt or perceived? What even is perception? And how do precepts match stuff 'out there'?
I was very happy to talk about my work on extending Integrated Information Theory to account for perception & meaning with @algarwegian.bsky.social. The talk is geared towards those already familiar with IIT, but may still be of interest even if you're not. Paper: arxiv.org/abs/2412.21111

Just Watched the ICE video. Claiming it is self defense is completely insane to me. This surely must be the beginning of the end for S-ice, and th3 administration. I lose all faith in their capacity to heal if it doesn't lead to larger outcries than ever before seen in the US.
