Building mago.studio
Rough 3D render in, finished shot out with Mago.

It's impressive how it builds out environments, matching lighting and perspective from a basic input.

No re-render needed. Just faster integration and environmental detail.

Coming soon to Mago!
September 8, 2026 at 9:04 AM
Brand deal after the shoot? Localizing for a new market? We're seeing Mago used to adapt product placement and branding in finished footage.

It's about making changes seamlessly, without reshoots. That's a real shift.

Bringing 88-year-old footage like this shot from Alexander Nevsky into the modern era isn't simple.

It's about consistent restoration, color, and detail without changing the original performance.

Respecting the past, enhancing for the future.

Studios needing complex environments on tight budgets is a recurring challenge.

With Mago, one studio take can become multiple scenes, with consistent relighting and reflections.

Took a playblast of a scorpion, rendered it on a live action plate with Mago.

Preserves animation performance, skips traditional lookdev. Feels like a powerful way to accelerate creative iterations.

Exploring style transfer for mobile game ads. Imagine testing different aesthetics across markets before full production.

Take existing footage, apply new styles consistently. What if studios could de-risk ad campaigns this way?

We needed a firetruck in a shot. Instead of permits and logistics, we used Mago to transform existing footage. It's all about making the new element fit perfectly with the original input.

Bringing Chaplin and Keaton's iconic performance to life in color.

It's all about consistent colorization, frame by frame, to respect the original while making it feel new.

Opens up classic cinema to fresh eyes. What if more classics got this treatment?

Working with vertical drama, I see how crucial backgrounds are.

Mago lets you shoot performances in a studio, then generate any background.

It's about coherent lighting, reflections, and shadows.

More creative freedom, less location hassle.

The Medieval 2 intro goes pretty hard, but what's going on there?

I used Mago to recover hidden details and restyle it.

It's like finding lost information within the footage.

What else could we reveal in old videos?

No budget for a castle? Just drop it in.

I'm finding Mago's set extension capability quite interesting. Real actors, real performance, but a completely new background that fits the scene. No green screen needed. It keeps the focus on the talent while opening up new creative options.

Bridging previs to final look with style transfer.

Imagine taking a rough animated pass and seeing it in the final art style instantly.

It's all about consistent style across frames. Fast creative iteration.

Restoring old film footage with Mago, like this clip from "Alexander Nevsky."

It's not just an upscale. We're talking image-to-image recreation, style transfer, then 4K upscale. Bringing history to life for new audiences.

Unlimited mode on Mago now covers every model, not just ours: Seedance 2.0, Kling 3.0, HappyHorse, GPT Image 2, all of it

No credit counting. Test wild ideas, run a look ten ways

Shot in a studio, all backgrounds generated with Mago

The interesting part isn't swapping the background, it's getting the light, shadows and reflections to actually match

One shoot, any environment

Is AI cheaper? Yes and no.

There's a very simple paradox at the heart of this question; if you're able to make a shot for $50:
- that's a complete paradigm shift and a completely new economy for professional studios
- that's completely out of reach for individual creators

I'm convinced that we will soon see some live action / anime hybrid content, especially in vertical formats

Actors allow you to capture a very specific performance, specific timing and expressions, and character replacement + style transfer allows you to get an anime output

I was a little bothered by the color of my remastered Nosferatu, so here's the black and white version.

I wonder if we'll see a resurgence of older movies and back catalogues now that we can easily remaster them

Remaster entirely done with Mago Style Transfer

As a fun little side project, I've been remastering old cinematics with Mago.

(For those who don't recognize it, this is Quistis from Final Fantasy VIII, so from around 1999)

A common request I see from directors or animators is the ability to preserve a character's expressiveness, whether it's an actor or animator

Usually a lot of work and effort has been put into the shot, to achieve a specific look, a specific smirk, a quick side eye

For all its potential, a lot of AI content ends up being pretty bland

It's a little disappointing but really shows that creativity is the secret sauce; without it, we all end up making simulacra of average sci-fi movies when we could make ethereal ghost angels dance under a starry night

We've been working a lot on AI rendering lately, mostly using our in house Mago Style Transfer model but also a few other APIs.

It's an extremely promising workflow: artists and animators keep control, you can quickly preview scenes and you can iterate much faster.

I'm heading over to FMX 2026 from May 6 until May 7!

Excited to show the magic of Mago and get the industry's perspective on AI VFX.

Drop me a DM if you want to meet there ↓

I've been playing around with restoring, colorizing and remastering old footage.

So naturally, I took what is arguably the first film ever and remastered with Mago. It worked pretty well!
