So @dwillner.bsky.social & I took some of our discussion thread from Bluesky last week regarding the "sexy apocalypse" predictions from the EA-aligned "AI Safety" folks, and wrote an article from the perspective (Dave's) of those who do *real* risk mitigation work. The apocalypse will not be sexy.

so long as governments, policy makers, and regulatory bodies continue to treat tech companies/products and their underlying anti-democratic and fascist ideologies as something separable, things will continue to get worse for fundamental rights and democracy

in order for an idea to be taken seriously it has to come from an Official Smart Person, preferably paired with a lot of references to European writers, which ends up being a pretty big intellectual vulnerability because a lot of those people are just regurgitating each other

For nearly a decade the drumbeat line in politics was “Twitter is not real life,” and the idea that anything happening on Twitter could affect real-world public opinion or politics was considered absurd

In 2022 I said young people were getting their ideas about Biden from TikTok and social media and got pilloried for it. The idea that social media matters AT ALL is very new, and the idea that “people use social media to figure out what the social consensus is” is only recently being considered.
also who the f is you in this case lol and if anyone is arguing against that, tell /them/ to read a book, but "social media changes public perception" has been the modus operandis for the far right since the beginning of the 10s

By far the biggest problem with delegating judgement to machines is the people who own the machines can tune them towards outcomes they prefer but those who don't own anything can't.

It's not the technology. It's a transfer of decision making power from rational accountable systems to capital.

An Atlanta suburb learned Flock was using livestreams from a children's gymnastics studio, a pool, and a playground in sales pitches to other cities. Residents are furious but the city renewed its contract with Flock anyway:

This may be mainly the kind of nerd that I am but IMO Congress should engage in more explicit constitutional interpretation through statutes, like literally spelling out how some clause will be understood. And openly contradicting judicial precedent where necessary

POPE LEO: well, you should know, you were there

Lovely system you have there, where the people can reject bad rulers without resorting to political violence again. Be a shame if something were to happen to it.

Me, joking: I can’t believe we chose “destroying the economy” and “losing wars” over “being nice to trans people occasionally”

Conservatives, dead serious: it was a tough choice, but I’m glad we picked “destroying the economy” and “losing wars” over “being nice to trans people occasionally”
I can’t believe there are really people like this
