You're laughing. Princess Beatrice's friend Alice Naylor-Leyland has been attacked by a rogue owl during a chaotic photoshoot and you're laughing.
We don’t do the Daily Mail, but as a public service, here is someone with far too much money being attacked by an owl.

A real shame, this. One of the best ministerial appointments of recent times:
The day’s first casualty: James Timpson resigns as prisons minister. This is a big surprise! Timpson had a long history as a prisons reformer before entering government and seen as one of Starmer’s more innovative & exciting appointments. He’s also delivered a big change programme in gov. So: why?
Prisons minister Lord Timpson quits government
The businessman said it was an "honour" to serve in the post, but the BBC understands he feels he has achieved all he can in the role.

He was shadow Treasury for three years and then a Treasury special advisor under Gordon Brown for nearly eight years. It's not a *bad* CV for the job, is it.
These journalists do realise I presume that Ed Miliband was literally the leader of the party in 2015 and fairly few people were expecting him to be Mitterand then. Plus there’s very little HMT experience in Labour and Ed has tons of it.
I've had 2 journalists today asking if Miliband as Chancellor would be a "Liz Truss moment" and find it difficult not to just respond "are you on crack?".

There are those who feel obliged to make excuses for Donald Trump. But for the rest of us, writes Alan Rusbridger , it is time to speak bluntly about what we see: the guy is nuts
We need to talk about Donald
The increasingly incoherent and volatile president is much easier to understand if we come to terms with one thing

As journalists working today many of us are taught to recognise disinformation when we see it and fight back against it.

Unfortunately there are some who willingly seek it out and put it on their front pages. A disgrace to the profession.

Which way, British man (woman, person)?

Me on Gorton and Denton for SEC Newgate News. As we look ahead to the next general election, the two most realistic outcomes are currently a hard right shift - or a Labour led patchwork of progressive parties.

This is a very, very stupid letter. It doesn't, I think, even really work for its target audience of Labour MPs - let alone the audience it has found.

If sincere, it also reveals a fundamental unreality and objectionable mindset.
Keir Starmer has written to all Labour MPs attacking the Green Party for embracing "divisive" and "sectarian" politics

I'm picking up concern among Labour MPs about how this letter will come across to people who have voted/are tempted to vote Green, as it could risk further alienating these voters

Some positive news around the UK economy - inflation down, retail sales up, tax receipts up, tentantive signs of higher productivity....

But also rising unemployment, falling wage increases, and flat GDP.

You wouldn't call it a recovery yet, but there's maybe a prospect of one.

Weird and almost universal revisionism today. Even at the time, it was pretty clear that Mandelson wasn't appointed *despite* his dodgy links but *because* of them. Trump's Washington is a dirty swamp. Mandelson was deemed a man able to swim in it. This wasn't a secret. Everybody said it out loud.
