Dear tv and radio producers. Thankyou for the invitation. But, no, I do not want to appear on your show to defend the idea that I am English, after 50 years of living and working here, because the increasingly feral right want to turn this into a "debate" and you cannot see how you're being played

If I was asked to define what race I am, I'd have to say probably the three-legged.

Though maybe egg and spoon.

Great thread on LLMs and whether "AI" can feel pain.
This is the nub.
Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence, and I am not the one making the extraordinary claim, so it is not my job to specify what the evidence should be.

I've supported non-violence my entire life but some folk are walking around just asking for a punch in the face...

This thread 😳
This news 😳
The tech side of all this is not my area of academic expertise but digital culture generally is so what I will say is that the key sea change here is AI overnight going from being a weapon the corporate class uses against us to one the masses are using against the corporate class

Well this seems seismic.

The old order is dying
A friend just wrote me about what is happening right now with AI decompiling games and applications (e.g., Adobe Photoshop) and it has really shaken me because the implications for the free market are staggering

Basically closed source software is over forever and it happened overnight
Open-Source Guru Raymond: AI Ends Closed-Source Software
Open-source co-founder Eric S. Raymond explains closed-source software is effectively over thanks to AI-powered reverse engineering.

This is so right on point.
AI is the perceived solution to the billionaire's desire to not pay wages.
You guys fantasize, a lot, about not having to pay for labor or be responsible for treating the labor source with dignity.

So much of GenAI discourse is about a desire for ethical enslavement.

And that does not exist.

The dissonance in having to prove I'm not a bot in order to have a conversation with a bot is quite something...
Then to be told the issue is fixed when nothing of the sort is true...
No wonder we're all struggling with our mental health.
I'm having a proper 'Falling Down' moment.

Yair's threads (may I call you Yair?) have been so helpful for me in understanding my own complicated relationship with Zionism and Israel and my Jewish heritage.
"Zionist" means basically two things. One, you find positive things in the history of Zionism. Second, you are part of a diaspora (eroding) consensus on Israel being part of Jewish identity
That's very broad, and far too fuzzy to be a meaningful term imo.

Zippy and Bungle freaked me out.
In honor of scary media month: what is the first piece of media you remember truly frightening you as a child?

The most perfect song for the most perfect month.

The fallen leaves that jewel the ground,
They know the art of dying.
And leave with joy their glad gold hearts
in the scarlet shadows lying.

Tom Waits' Jersey girl is the most beautiful love song ever written and it isn't even close.

I'm happy to see nostalgia starting to get the bad rep it deserves.
I've always found it dubious; clinging to anything past, but previously seemed to be swimming against the tide of opinion.

25% of people have NO EMPATHY for people fleeing for their lives.
That's fucking appalling.
Imagine being that lacking in basic humanity.
How do you even abide yourselves?
Both poles of opiniom exist everywhere (in shifting proportioms - by politics + by educ, age, ethnicity). Nationally, about 1/4 people have no sympathy at all for those in small boats (1/2 not much) for those in boats & 1/6 have a great deal of sympathy (4/10 a fair amount)
bsky.app/profile/sund...
We've tracked via Ipsos sympathy for those crossing Channel in boats for the last 5 years:

- those with 'no sympathy at all' are up to a quarter: visible, vocal + mobilised.
- those with 'a lot of sympathy' now a sixth (from a quarter
- But most people are still balancers, despite tougher climate

read the thread.
A FlyDubai plane issued emergency signals while heading towards Tel Aviv and IDF jets were scrambled in response.

The cause: the two FlyDubai pilots had a brawl.

Karma's a bitch, bitch.
It is a cold, which God Almighty in justice did give me while I sat lewdly sporting with Mrs. Lane the other day with the broken window in my neck. I went to bed with a posset, being very melancholy in consideration of the loss of my hearing.

Great thread.
AI #slopaganda is not so much about fakes or disinformation. It's about aligning the world with your preformulated descriptions of it, making reality disappear behind its formulaic image, rendering visible all your fears at once in order to enjoy them more. It's a technology of fascist daydreaming
This is 100% accurate and it’s why I’d never go to Bavaria
September 26, 2026 at 3:35 PM
Exactly so.
I have been utterly dirt poor at various points in my life -- rent-cheque-bouncing, 20p food budget for the day type poverty. I still never voted for fascists because killing brown and queer people would not have actually fixed that (and even if it had, it's not a price worth paying).
This is maybe the right hour for me to post that the "we're all so poor and miserable of course people are voting for fascists" shit is such moral cowardice; I would have to be starving to death to consider a Trump vote and we are not generally starving to death. That's very rarely a thing here.

I dunno, this seems bad...

We've always known that the ruling class needs to keep everyone uneducated to stay in power.
This says the quiet bit out loud.
Ezra Klein asked Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang about AI making kids worse at math and reading. Huang’s reply: “Does it matter?”

Then he said he doesn’t know his own address or phone number. “We’re going to lose some fine intellectual dexterity.” www.nytimes.com/2026/09/23/o...

Telling my wife that I go to Deptford, I went, by water to Westminster Hall, and there finding Mrs. Lane, took her over to Lambeth, where we were lately.
