In aikido, we create opportunities for flow.
It was a fun day to be on campus. As a middle aged adult, I can now appreciate the intention behind these events.

The band and the cheerleaders practice, get their uniforms on, and perform as a group.

Here is to a day with pep.

I solved a thing at work today by discovering the right connection. That's always what counts: the entry point.

Developing a sense of safety means being able to take things in stride, and parse out where to put our effort and attention. It's simple to make sound choices from a regulated system.

It's a great joy of life to bring home new socks. I like this shoe store on Vine in Berkeley, that also has quality socks.

Nick Sensei and I drove down to Scotts Valley yesterday (near Santa Cruz) to teach somatic exercises to Blue Sky Leaders (a year long leadership intensive).

When we are calm, clear, and soft hearted, it's simple enough to get along. That means we know where to focus.

I loaned out the label maker years ago, and was quite sad until it came back. The same thing happened when I loaned out my calculator.

In related news, it's Virgo season.

Now I know to keep these treasured objects nearby (along with the laminator, sheet protectors, and spare parts).

Simplify. When I lift weights, eat oatmeal, and put away the laundry, life gets sweeter. The practice of discernment frees up energy.

I'm entering the mid-40s this week, and am reflecting on what a wonderful childhood I had.

Two loving homes, horses and books, and plenty of healthy food. My parents are educated, spoke to us kids with intelligence, and asked questions to help us find our way.

May we carry these gifts forward.

I used to try and model excellence, though that can lead to extra pressure (for self and others). These days, I make an effort to model learning with a warm heart. It means more space for all of us.

But you gotta have somethin' to tie it to
Otherwise all you've got is a knot

It's a whole other thing"

In every moment, there is a chance to observe and contribute thoughtful attention.

Things are going well at the dojo. Our youth class is learning tanto and strikes, along with freestyle. The students know that developing their power, focus, and heart is all part of the practice.

When unraveling a habit, it helps to be open to many other paths. If we are too attached to any particular solution, that troublesome habit may just stick around.

The older I get, the more I focus on being reliable. Showing up early, putting in the preparation, and finishing projects is a skill set that any of us can learn.

It shows engagement and gives the group focus.

It's a great joy to winnow down to the essentials. I like taking supplements that add to strength, resilience, and brain function.

We are delighted to share that new adult students train free in October. Students learn calm, grounding, and creative approaches to conflict resolution. It's a supportive and friendly group.

See you at the dojo.

That's right, we are making three new black belts at Aiki Arts Center this fall.

Word of the week: resourcefulness. We ask thoughtful questions and research the options before taking strategic action.

I went to the North Berkeley library recently to renew the card (super simple) and pick up two new books.

I'm really proud that the dojo is a place where serious people can develop themselves. We have fun too, it's all there.

Our most advanced young student these days is in elementary school, super observant and quirky, and supporting them in developing power and confidence is a huge joy.

It's an emerging value to share information and skills freely. If we are going to evolve as a species, any of us, we have got to start having more meaningful conversations that move humanity forward.
