Dad History is the kind of history most Americans find accessible enough to read. High-quality Dad History should be hailed for what it is: a crucial way to learn and to inform our civic debates and public understanding.

Richard was a real person with dreams, ambitions, and plans, all of them denied to him because of slavery. We know him today only through the paper trail left by the men fighting to keep him enslaved. That fact alone should give us pause.

Wish list time: I’m actively building a list of ambitious narrative nonfiction—and I’m looking for projects with the intellectual rigor, narrative force, and the cultural reach of Say Nothing, The Wager, The Splendid and the Vile, The Warmth of Other Suns, and SPQR, etc.

Thrilled to share a new deal with Oxford University Press: Lincoln From Life by Harold Holzer—arguably the leading Lincoln scholar working today. The book looks at how Lincoln’s image, as shaped by artists and sculptors, helped carry him from candidate to icon.

A member of the House Republican caucus said this.

Oh. So things are BAD bad.

I hope Democrats learn from Merrick Garland’s mistakes and the failure of Obama’s “move on” strategy vis-a-vis Bush era war crimes, and understand that all these people ultimately need to go to prison.
