I'm a fan of the new(ish) Comparative Genome Viewer feature on NCBI: www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/cgv which provides interactive whole-genome riparian plots, like this for Helicoverpa sp, which allows you to quickly and easily examine interesting features. Only a handful of genomes on there for now though!

❄️🧬 Can we generate high-quality reference genomes without the cold chain?

A new study suggests the answer is yes. DNA preserved at room temperature for up to one week produced chromosome-scale reference genomes.

Arctic and Antarctic fish live in waters cold enough to freeze blood.
Many evolved special antifreeze proteins that prevent ice crystals from forming. The surprising part? These proteins evolved independently in different fish lineages on opposite ends of the planet!

🧵 Excited to share my final PhD paper in Ecology Letters!

A classic question in ecology is why some clades contain more species in local assemblages than others.

We argue that part of the answer lies in the timing of speciation itself.
