It runs both ways. Some claim far more than they do. Others quietly use AI for things they'd never admit to.

The gap keeps getting read as dishonesty. I read it as pressure doing what pressure does.

Worth naming: PagerDuty, who ran the survey, sells workplace AI tooling. A vendor finding widespread unmanaged AI use has an interest in that answer.

Three other datasets agree. Almost none of the coverage said who paid.

Researchers at Duke ran four preregistered experiments with 4,439 people. Disclosing AI use gets you judged as less competent and less motivated.

The penalty disappears when the person evaluating you also uses AI.

So the hiding isn't dishonesty. It's an accurate read of the room.
