"we built a product that views your friends as its competition" was already dystopian but this is "we specifically & actively want to take advantage of old people's loneliness"
i think we should throw everyone who has ever been even a little bit nice to sam altman in jail

even if i had a career which i knew 100% for sure wouldn't be automated away, AI companies are trying to sell the idea that their tech replaces the need to make art & have friends, which is unimaginably bleak no matter what it does to my bank account balance or future aspirations

i've told students that using AI for research is often worse than having it write for you, bc even when it tells you something that happens to be true it disconnects you from the material process of discovering & understanding the truth

when i talk about research in comp classes, i always emphasize that knowledge doesn't just exist, it's created by an actual process, & it's not enough to know a fact without knowing WHY people know that fact

Sorry I got to the "What if AI dissapeared tomorrow" part and felt such an overwhelming wave of peace and comfort at the concept that I didn't care to read the rest.

this one seems like a mixed bag. cars have gotten better in most ways but in a few specific ways they've gotten worse too (touch screen controls have been shown to distract people, cars w/ higher blindspots are worse for pedestrians, etc)

it always kinda seems like women can't talk about being attracted to men's physical features in any specific way bc some men will get blisteringly angry about it

I do not wish to debate you on the truth of the point re Plantner, but hear me now, educational attainment is not a proxy for class. Yes whole careers have been made arguing it is. BUT PLEASE HEAR ME NOW. EDUCATIONAL ATTAINMENT IS NOT A PROXY FOR WORKING CLASS. JUST STOP.

Several students wrote of the moral confusion implicit in a college that promotes AI and says don't cheat but makes it really, really easy to cheat. One said they don't pay attention to AI policies because they don't think the college really wants to know what's going on. 9/

yeah i think i liked Disclosure Day more than i disliked it but i was trying hard not to laugh at "how will people believe in a supreme being when there are actual supreme beings?" [video of an alien that looks like a child with consumption]

i'll never understand why every source, including the original report, takes the finding, "teens want more media about friendship" & treats it like that must mean "& less sex/romance." later, a big portion of teens outright say they think romance is overused, but this question isn't even about that
