The U.S. has entered its 13th COVID wave, with an estimated 1 in 86 Americans currently infectious. Around 567,000 new infections are occurring daily, totalling 3.69 million in a week. PMC estimates a single week at this level could result in 900–1,600 excess deaths.

Because ignoring it, and pretending you aren’t adding another bullet to your Covid roulette gun every time you get an infection, is part of the denialism 80% of this country is living in.

NYT email headline from today - "How to prepare for respiratory virus season"

That links to an article that doesn't mention masks or clean air. Or the fact that we've been having a Covid wave this summer. It's not seasonal

“COVID has had detrimental effects on me, people around me and so many others, so I work diligently to ensure we can be as safe as possible (i.e masking, testing etc), thus meaning we can show up as best we can to care in many other forms.” —Lydia

The doctor who claimed that vaccines cause autism lost his medical license for faking for the study. But his lies and the damage he did to public health persist long after his paper was pulled. This is why science communication is so difficult; all it takes is one grifter.

The conversation about AI in health stuff is always about the risks of patients using AI.

I'm more worried about possibilities like every appointment gets inspected by an insurance company in detail so that if a patient uses the slightly wrong words about something their care is denied.

If you deny that COVID pushed our hospitals to the limit, vaccines work, and healthcare workers are heroes, you should not be allowed to hold public office, let alone lead a health agency.

Please stop saying “lockdowns.” There were never true lockdowns in the US, and it fuels far right narratives to repeat this inaccurate statement. You can say closures, you can say restrictions, or better, you can say public health measures which saved many lives.
People still complain about “lockdowns” but we had none in the US. We had stay-at-home orders, where although businesses were closed, you could still go outside whenever you wanted. Other countries had far stricter rules, and yet have been much more accepting of them as they saved many more lives.

I recommend doi.org/10.1126/science.caredit.aay0523 by @jananiharan.bsky.social for a good intro to the hidden curriculum.

"If you know these things, you barely notice them. If you don't, they are completely bewildering" is the most visceral way I've heard it described, and that resonated with me.
I felt lost in a new academic culture. Then I learned about the hidden curriculum
Navigating unspoken norms and expectations was a challenge for this international student, but she eventually found the support she needed

I mask in public still because no one has given me any convincing scientific evidence that getting repeat COVID infections is safe or sustainable for health, especially brain health 🧠

It’s incredibly frustrating that we don’t have timely or accurate Covid variant data in the US anymore.

It’s possible that the public health lab funding sources for this on-going effort (which has been carrying us as the CDC does almost zero sequencing) are starting to dry up.

i post this every year because men soaking in toxic masculinity are all “why can’t we get women” and Tom Holland dances in drag and lands one of the hottest women on the planet, maybe there’s a lesson here guys

"Should I start masking again because of #hantavirus?"

It's been a wise preventive behavior to mask the past 6 years. The U.S. has twice annual COVlD waves. We've dipped into a "lull" after the 12th wave this winter, but we're still at 180,000 estimated new daily infections.

8 WEEKS?!
Unlike the CDC, UKHSA recommends a 45-day isolation period based on a consensus regarding the max incubation period for Andes #hantavirus. This precautionary measure aims to monitor individuals for potential symptoms, with reports indicating a incubation window of up to 8 wks.
🚢 CDC activated Level 3 response for a hantavirus outbreak on the MV Hondius. 17 Americans will be monitored at @nebraskamed.bsky.social’s National Quarantine Unit. None show symptoms yet, while 9 others in 6 states are also under observation. www.ketv.com/article/hant...
