Seeing this just fills me with absolute despair at the climate situation. We are still at peak emissions. We haven't even begun decreasing emissions and even if we did, the warming that's baked from past emissions will last for centuries. We're cooked.

Yes, reading and literacy rates are dropping. But the fault here isn't with kids but adults and the mess we've made of our education system. We aren't supporting kids. We can keep printing op-eds whining about college students who can't read a full book, or we can fix an education system we broke.

One way to prevent climate disaster is to stop studying it and act really surprised when there are floods, fires, and crop failures. Then say: "How could anyone have known, or allocated resources for this? How sad that you are starving and exposed to extreme temperatures. We're praying for you."
NSF has reduced the research budget for all atmospheric, ocean, and earth sciences by ~80%.

80%!

A lot of us will not be conducting new research or training new students for the foreseeable future.

Reminder that the New York Times is under multiple boycotts, including for its key role in trans genocide.

This includes not sharing their older version of the dialect quiz.
"If trans people want a boycott of The New York Times, where's the call to do so?"

Here is a declaration laying out how the NYT is a key driver of trans genocide, why boycotts work and why anyone who gives a damn about trans lives and rights must boycott The New York Times.
Boycott The New York Times
For years The New York Times has relentlessly pushed anti-trans propaganda, playing a significant role in the escalating genocide against us. It's far past time for a call to action: anyone who cares ...

There is a concerted, multi-pronged conservative effort to destroy the WNBA just as it starts to gain national prominence and mainstream attention. They want women’s sports to exist only on the margins, in terms that they alone dictate

CDs don’t make you listen to 10 minutes of gambling ads before playing 3 songs.
16.3 million CDs were sold in the first half of 2026 in the US, a 16 percent increase year-over-year.
Why are people buying so many CDs?
Collectors, affordable prices, and big K-pop albums.

ICE is engaged in a very large escalation nationwide, with the agency claiming to be hitting record arrest numbers amid the return of quotas. This has gotten very little attention from the media because ICE learned lessons from the chaotic disasters of Kristi Noem’s tenure.

Keep a watch.
ICE is surging in the Seattle area. (Map shows activity in the last week)

Do you have your whistle with you?

Seven years ago a representative from Google reached out to me in an official capacity to discuss the company's energy use. I told them it would become necessary for major firms in core economies to reduce energy use in order to enable Paris-compliant decarbonisation.

Absolutely brutal thread. "A.i." in education is a fucking plague and anyone who pushes it on professors and students is betraying education itself. An act of abuse and betrayal to push this fucking cheating, lying, bullshit machine on anyone, ESPECIALLY in an educational environment.
At the end of the term I asked my college creative wriing students to submit anonymous thoughts on AI. No real surprises: Mood ranges from resignation to despair, capitulation from embittered erosion of standards to total, feelings of betrayal from deep to furious. 1/

To our dismay, the artist and author Marjane Satrapi has passed away.

As she wrote, ordinary Americans and Iranians have more in common with each other than we do with either of our governments, which have far too much in common with each other.

We honor her memory and oppose the war.
