speaking of unsatisfying endings, I just finished Thomas Pynchon's latest and it just sort of...ends. But given how much he's indebted to James Joyce, I get it. Ulysses is one of the all-time unsatisfactory endings.

did you ever see the movie Looper? There's a moment in it where the character is trying to understand the mechanics and the other guy is like "just...accept this." I loved the "shut up nerds" energy. Also Mandel is great! Station Eleven is also excellent

last year I read John Maynard Keynes' General Theory on Interest and Employment and I can't understand the US tax code. I use TurboTax and pray

I lived most of my life in Georgia or Los Angeles. Also, NYC in winter is bleak as hell. Snow makes it magical. It's rough to get through with zero snow

Trump is ultimately a figurehead who says what he has to to win votes. I don't think he's driving the policy agenda himself as much as people think. Miller might be worse.

in a world where it's Tesla Model S vs...some shitty gas car, sure. Now there's an electric Mercedes-Benz for the same price but with all the high-end German shit Mercedes is known for. The S feels middle class comparatively

Musk is a great example of the adage "it's better to be first than to be better." Tesla had an elite product and stopped innovating for a decade while companies with significantly more manufacturing resources decided to catch up

meanwhile in Spain you have Madrid, Andalucia, the Basque Region, Catalunya...Belgium has 3 distinct regions with 3 separate languages. Germany also has a north/south divide between Berlin and Munich. None of the tribalism is uniquely American

oh...oh boy. In short: yes, this exists basically everywhere. But German is its own thing because it was 2 separate countries for decades. East Germany is still *very* different politically than West Germany.
