Cleyera: Conversations on Shinto
@cleyerapodcast.bsky.social
This is Cleyera: Conversations on Shinto, a podcast where two friends and fellow practitioners of Shinto in the Anglosphere, talk about their faith, its cultural, historical, and other contexts, and try to bring knowledge and community to others.
Our next episode is on norito, the formal liturgical prayers of Shinto. This is something that is not necessary for everyday practice, but is something that the two of us are choosing to study together in pursuit of deeper understanding.

The importance of everyday impromptu prayer remains constant.

It's been awhile since I did any devotional art, but a friend whose art and work I deeply respect encouraged me, and so, this portrait is now done.

today in talking about reciting the Amatsu Norito before my morning prayers I referred to it as being like boresighting a gun, so uh, very much not beating the Hachiman ujiko stereotype I guess 😅⛩️

Arguably the most famous prayer uttered to Hachiman-ōkami is that of Nasu no Yoichi at the Battle of Yashima in 1185. Taunted by one of the Heike men on that clan's boats, who waved around a fan with a sun disc on it, Yoichi prayed to Hachiman-sama to help him land the shot. 🧵

Folks, we want to bring your attention to the work of @cerise-pomme.bsky.social in illustrating the Shinto pantheon with patient care. Give her a follow and ask her questions about her process!
Hachiman-Ōkami (八幡大神)
Great kami of war, protection, archery, and sacred guardianship, long revered as the tutelary deity of warriors, the nation, and the protection of communities and the state.
His Gokenzoku (animal messengers) are doves.

I… came across someone on Threads claiming to walk the path of “Gongen Yose Miko” who was also claiming they teach Shinto, and for anyone with a real background in Shinto, this was the biggest headache I’ve ever participated in

I feel stressed, but I also feel like this is a reminder to Be Careful

They are their own beings. Learn their native names and say hello yes, but remember they are different.

This was something that came up in attempt to record @cleyerapodcast.bsky.social last night with @riversidewings.bsky.social but had to be cut.

Okami as a series has covered much of the Kojiki already. What do you think it will be drawing from in the sequel? We've got some theories, but we're curious to hear what you think.

As with the incident with the influencer doing pullups on a torii, we feel obliged to say again: when you visit Japan, please treat torii with respect. This is the gate of a sacred space, not a theme park.
