Yes, many people are not failing at grief; they are simply grieving. Therapy can witness that, but it can’t always make it easier. The problem is that we spent decades telling people to come to therapy. We can’t now resent them for taking us seriously.
“When every struggle is routed toward a professional, we risk mistaking mental health issues that require treatment for problems of isolation or circumstance,” Harvey Lieberman writes.

Part of the reason why I love my UCC job is because I get to connect, in the office, with my team. But UCC work doesn’t always provide the schedule flexibility many practitioners want or need. Still, it’s the expectation of loneliness and isolation in private practice work that terrifies me.

Songs about psychiatry
Psychobabble is the bane of prose because its prescriptive note cuts the oxygen from ambiguity. What purports to be self-evident looks like imposition. Yet songs about psychoanalysts, psychiatrists…

As an insecure writer/therapist, there is a strange mercy in working at a university counseling center: my clients are often intelligent, but they are usually not yet the kind of brilliant adult novelists whose accomplishments would make me feel exposed.
“I know all sorts of brilliant people who are bad writers; it must be possible for a brilliant therapist to be such a person, and yet I felt that if your prose were horrendous it would make it impossible for me to trust you.” New fiction by Ben Lerner. newyorkermag.visitlink.me/HQbBcJ

It would be one thing if I wrote fiction about Cromwell or aliens, but, given that my protagonists resemble me, how could I know you weren’t mixing us up?
