Entirely optional. Stats, quizzes, etc. The game itself will likely not even mention it.

Ghost of Tsushima used the wind as your GPS and it was brilliant and refined.

The modern used of pings/gps in games has taken all the thinking out of playing.

I've long been exhausted of the 'follow the dot' game systems and it's a shame they keep using it for my favorite characters/IP games.
